Is that because either the projector or laptop doesn't have HDMI? Then you need the correct converter.
Is that because they both have HDMI but you get no picture? Check that the video resolution of the laptop is not greater than the projector will accept. Check the specs on the projector. Might be 854x480 if yours is like this one

I would set the HDMI output as your extended or 2nd display and set it to match the projector. That way the laptop screen will remain optimal.
The HDMI cable you are using can affect this to especially if it is a long one.
