"Although this story could have happened decades ago, with a Walkman instead of an iPod, "

Stop excusing Apple! It has happened decades ago. Blame Sony!

[citation][nom]rsg22[/nom]What an idiot, you need to be aware of your surroundings regardless. How do you end up with YOUR BACK TO A TRAIN?[/citation]

That would be a 50/50 chance if you're walking on train tracks, they come both directions...

We have people walking the tracks all the time in our area, even though there's a sidewalk that runs parallel to them about 20 feet away... I really don't get it.

I rode 'NJ Transit' and 'PATH' trains to and from NYC when I lived in New Jersey. Forget kids. You would have been amazed to see the stupid things allegedly responsible adults did in and around moving trains, and without the distraction of personal stereos.

[citation][nom]eyemaster[/nom]You have a 50% chance at having your back at a train if you're on the train tracks... 1 in 2 is better than odds at lottery.[/citation]
Of course, if you walk down the SIDE of the tracks, the chances of a train veering off the tracks to hit you drop sharply to around the 0% mark...

I've worked on railroads for several summers, and trust me, you won't hear or feel the train coming from afar. Specially not IF you're running (like he probably was)! How the hell can you even feel the ground vibrating if you're running?

As the other comment said, he probably was running before the train alongside the tracks and switched to the other side too late. Wanted to "live on the edge" so to speak. Maybe some wild tune gave him courage. Maybe look in the mirror first, and think what it was about being young. It was about being irrational and stupid. RIP..

Where I live some drunken people jump from cruise ships to the cold sea, in the dark, just for fun. Well it'll cost them tens of thousands, if they even survive it.

I live in jersey too and it sucks that this kid died but it was his own fault, trains just dont pop out of nowhere theyre hundred ton behemoths that scream along and you can hear the horn for miles!

I go to Rutgers University in new Brunswick which is packed with dumb ass people (most of which are either college students or illegal immigrants) and about a year or two ago I almost hit a dumb ass girl with my car who stepped off the curb while talking on her phone and had no idea I was coming and its a straight half mile long road that you can see end to end!

We have a saying around the area I live in
"You cant fix stupid!"
This article just showed me one way that you can!
Feel bad for the kids family, but it really was a stupid move on his part!
