[citation][nom]santfu[/nom]two things, firstly i'm impressed that someone can ride a bike and text at the same time, and secondly did the cyclist ride into a crossing or something, as my first impression would be to blame the truck driver and not the cyclist[/citation]
I went back to find the article, but the paper has moved it to their paid archives. It's not worth stumping up money for! :)

That said, he was riding along a bust 5 lane road and veered into traffic (if memory serves).

Well, the title of the article is somewhat biased. I mean it partially conveys the message that it was the fault of the iPod. I say, we should be more aware of our surroundings.

You have a 50% chance at having your back at a train if you're on the train tracks... 1 in 2 is better than odds at lottery.

[citation][nom]figgus[/nom]We just had someone in my home town get hit while TEXTING on a BICYCLE. A delivery truck flattened him.People really do need to learn when to pay attention to what they are doing.[/citation]

funny I was riding my bycicle 2 days ago and a girl was riding her bycicle while texting (on opposite directions) and she almost fell.
it was kind of funny because she was ok, but then I was thinking what if she would have been on the road? ... or driving?

we all know the answer to that , it could have been fatal for her and whoever would have been on her way.

then it stoped been funny.

NO, this is still a reminder to everyone NOT TO WALK ON TRAIN TRACKS. Jesus Christ people, you're asking for it, distracted or not.

I don't care if the kid had BOSE headphones on and was deaf as a post, the ground vibration that trains make would tell him that one was coming. The fact that he ran alongside the train and got hit tells me that he made an error in judgement and that the iPod/Walkman/whatever had little or nothing to do with it.

To Lamorpa, Marcus states that this could have happened years ago with a walkman, so he's not Apple bashing.
As an aside, I nearly hit a kid on a bike on a narrow country road about 4 weeks ago. I slowed right down, waited for a safe overtaking opportunity, and as I started to speed up to pass he swung across the road in front of me. MP3 player on, NO IDEA that I was there, even though I had been sat behind him for 15-20 seconds. Scared the shit out of him when I hit my horn though. HE could hear my horn, and I'm pretty sure a train horn is louder.

Not to bash, but Bikers need to remember they have to follow the same traffic laws as the rest of us; they are easily worse then car drivers here in NY/NJ, and thats saying something...[nearly got hit 5 times on way to work today...]
