hmm, if you not crazy about graphics performance for 3d then the specs you listed will be available from any company.

are you asking for what is the cheapest laptop you can get under 1200 with those specs?

or which one out of the 2 you listed would do better? if it's the latter then you need to tells us what the specs are that you're looking at

- If only using 2D, then the IGP of the SB I7 (HD3000) should be fine. Problem is when you move up to a 17" wit the I7 Most will also have a dedicated GPU.
- The Tosibia Qosmi would be my choice over the Dell (Higher reliability)
- Would also consider the Samsung RF711 series and the Asus 17 in line up. Lower cost. I have the I5 RF711-S01 (S02 is the I7 version)

- Some other factors to consider:
- Daul HDD bay so that you can upgrade to a SSD for performance (DO NOT buy one with an SSD) and then move the HDD to Bay #2 for storage space.
- Blu-ray, get if needed - about a $100 upgrade if you do it yourself.
- RAM: Don't sweat, upgrading is cheap and simple. Note the Samsung RF711's come with a single 4 Gig module (vs 2 x 2. ) so only have to buy 1 4 gig stick and YES you want 2 sticks as a single stick will run single channel, not daul channel.

Some 27 choices (If not US, still a good place to see what is available and user comments): http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006740%20600004346%20600003982%20600004380&IsNodeId=1&name=17.3%22

Asus->Toshibia->samsung -> Dell ..... Not my choices HP and Acer
