16 gb RAM, i7, 2 TB harddrive vs 8gb ssd 1tb harddrive i7

I open 40-50 tabs at the same time generally for research and have 10-15 word documents and similar number of powerpoint documents open at once.

Have a fast internet connection but want to be able to open internet pages quickly and leave open tabs and click on them a day or two later and open them quickly.

Powerpoint I ideally would like to open quickly and switch between word and powerpoint quickly.

For the usage you described... it should last you for the next 5-6 years.

Not by much though. The 1st choice is also very similar except with less ram. But you can always add more ram later. so if the first is cheaper then you might want to take that.

Thank you very much, the first isn't cheaper. Could a ssd drive be replaced in the future? I heard ssds can degrade quickly so within a year could lose a fair bit eg a loss of 100 from 400 or 500 speeds.

Not true. SSD are more reliable than traditional HDDs. Depending on which SSD you buy. Samsung 850 EVO/PRO are very good.

Is it likely that the one in that computer is good? Which computer is likely to be faster and keep running all those things faster when they're all left open for a few days?

The one with the ssd cache will be slightly more faster.

When you repeat the tasks you usually perform, those files will be put into the 8GB ssd cache. So when you do them again those frequently accessed files and programs will open faster.

This in a nutshell is the job of a cache ssd.

It's like ram for the hdd, you know?

Would a surface pro 3 be a lot slower and likely to freeze or take quite a few seconds to load a pdf, word document or scroll up and down when running lots of programs at once ie 40-50 webpages, 10 word docs, a few powerpoints? The i3 surface may do after a few days etc

If I've opened a powerpoint and I open another powerpoint, is the program in the cache hence will open faster due to ssd or being a new instance of it, not open lots faster. Once open is it run by Ram, the scrolling up and down, opening menus etc?

That link does not specify which i7 processor it has.

On the other hand, it has a stand-alone SSD. So its bound to be much much faster.
