I need help choosing between these two:

$105 - Logitech Z-2300 200 watts RMS 2.1 Speaker System
$59 - Logitech X-540 70 watts 5.1 Speaker

1) The first one is THX certified while the second one is .... well 5.1. Do more speakers increase the sound quality because you have speakers which specialize in particular ranges? Or do more speakers only increase the surround sound effect? I would prefer the one with better sound quality, especially the bass.

2) And what kind of media can use the 5.1 speakers? Besides games can DVD's and DVD rips play in 5.1?

3) How do I judge the watt difference? 200 watt VS 70 watt. Does this only dictate the max volume the speakers can be played? I don't play music loud and need the music to sound good at low volumes. Will high wattage speakers perform poorly at low volumes?

1) Do more speakers increase sound quality? If you mean 4 speakers playing stereo material, then no, it's more likely to degrade sound quality due to destructive interference. Having more speakers allows you to hear discrete surround sound (5.1 surround sound source). In addition you can play non-discrete (which is like playing stereo with 4 speakers). The Z-2300 probably has the better subwoofer.

2) DVDs are 5.1, yes. There is also DVD-audio.

3) The listed wattage is a measure of the maximum amplifier output at 0.1% distortion. At low volumes there (should be) no difference in sound quality provided the amps are competently designed.

So what does the wattage mean? Do higher watts only mean you can play your music at higher volumes without bad sound coming out?

How many watts do I need for comfortable listening? I will never blast it in a huge party.
