i was set on a gtx 970 and maybe get another later because im interested in 1440p and not sure one would be good enough but i heard today that new games may need 6gb of vram for ultra settings so maybe i should get the r9 295x and know im covered any opinions welcome
thanks

Solution
get the gtx 970 x 2 for sure

sli wont give you twice as much vram nor will crossfire all it does is extend the gpu performance and make it perform better
Getting an r9 295x2 will not give you 6GB VRAM, it will give you 4GB of it just as you will with SLI'd GTX 970's. XFire and SLI gives you the VRAM of the card with the minimum amount of memory and does not multiply with additional cards. 4 cards with 4GB of vram each does not give you 16GB of VRAM, it gives you 4GB.

I agree with jbrown. GTX 970s are the best value GPU around and they will only improve as newer drivers become available. the 4gb VRAM they come with should be fine for a while yet.

this ad says its 8gb but that maybe marketing gimmick i understand your point i just assummed they had somehow altered the ram on this card so it really was 8 not 4 and 4 with only 4 being used

its definitely a gimmic because i have not seen this anywhere and there are alot of forums and real life comparisons done with these cards ... take it from me you wont get double the vram by going sli or crossfire just double performance
