4 pole headset splitter microphone wont work

I recently bought a splitter for my 4 pole Headset to use wiith my pc. the splitter is 4pole female to 2 x 3pole male. my pc recognises both the mic and the headphones but the mic doesnt work. the mic has a button in it like apple earbud headphones do. Neither my DNA headset or my skullcandy headphones work with the mic. i believe it has to do with the button. is there anybody who knows how to fix this?
