Acer Aspire Boot Fail

Hi,
When I got home today my Aspire which had been working fine, failed to boot up.
Power lights on, fans on. No harddrive lights, nothing on the monitor.
I tried resetting the ram, unplugging and also removing the battery, and using hotkeys to try to turn the computer off (i.e. Windows button, U, Enter) to check for any kind of response. Nothing.

Thoughts on solving this?

Small update: although I don't see my hdd light (or wifi light) come one, I am fairly certain I hear the drive spinning.
Fans will rev up now and then.

Usage notes: the laptop has 2-3 years on it, and as of late I use it mostly for web/office stuff. I tend to almost always hibernate rather than shutdown to preserve my big crop of firefox windows. Currently in Germany, so 220v, which my PSU should be able to handle.
