acer laptop boots up, but screen is blank. Can plug in external monitor and see desktop fine. Suggestions?

Solution
If when you attached an external monitor it is fine, but you can't see anything on the attached display, then either the ribbon cable that connects the display or the display itself are the problem.

NOTE: If the laptop is under warranty, contact the manufacturer for a repair/replacement. Do not open it up and start doing any of the following.

If it isn't under warranty any longer then you would need to open up the laptop and check the ribbon cable for bends, pinches, tears, and other damage. Also disconnect it and then reconnect it, to make sure the problem wasn't just that the ribbon cable was loose. Should none of this fix the problem, you may need to replace that cable and/or the display to resolve it.
