I am working on my son's Acer Aspire 5520-5912. I purchased and installed a new hard drive, a "Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD1600BEVT 160GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM" which replaced the Toshiba MK1637GSX factory installed (same size). I have the recovery disks from Acer for this system. However I get an error message "Recovery32 Type Mismatch" when trying to install them. I have checked the system information via F2 and confirmed that the system "sees" the new hdd. I researched a lot of posts that indicate ths error is related to the HDD not being formatted and partitioned and that the Acer Recovery disks do not perform this function for you. I could not find the 'Post Acer Disk Formatter CD ISo Image' as mentioned in other posts on the Acer Website. However I do find on their Download/Support pages under my specific product and the "BIOS" page a file called "Acer Bios V1.33" with a size of 2.2 MB. Acer also has the following warning posted on this page "Flashing the wrong BIOS can cause harm to the system. Acer recommends that you should only upgrade your firmware/drivers if you have been instructed to do so by an Acer Customer Care representative. By using these firmware/drivers you agree to accept the possibility of product failure." So I figured I better do some additional checking. The previos system BIOS version is V1.08 (per F2), so it appears that this file is newer.

Is this the file I need?
I welcome any advice or help in getting this laptop back up and running.

Thanks

I download this iso burned it to disc my computer booted right up to it.I followed instructions it gave which was 2 commands.

If finished formating my drive told me to pop disc out restart.

I popped disk out insterted my restore disk I had made via acery recovery system.

"I have the same problem. I try to erecovery Disc and I am getting a "Recovery32 type mismatch error". Try formating it with windows 2000, it is hanging....When i tried it with 98 it is not showing C: drive because it is NTFS formated.

Still trying something.....

has any one found a fix for this problem. I downloaded the format iso from Acer, made a bootable disk, ran it, and inserted disk 1, then disk 2, when directed. Started formatting the drive, and got the stupid mismatch error AGAIN!

This might work. I experienced the same problem on my Acer Aspire 4720Z. As usual, the Acer support folks were not much help. They just send you the instructions to recover your system. They don't tell you how to get past the type mismatch error. I think this error message has something to do with the OS partition (partition 2) being corrupted. The way I got past the type mismatch error was to boot up using a WinPE CD then format partition 2 using diskpart. Here is a link from MS on how to create a WinPE CD. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303891
Here are the steps to use diskpart. Insert the WinPE CD in your CD drive. Change your BIOS setting to use CD/DVD as the first boot option. Save your changes and boot up. Once your machine boots up with WinPE, at the prompt, type diskpart then hit enter. Enter the following commands and hit enter after each command is typed: select disk 0, select partition 2, format fs=ntfs quick. When all done, type exit then hit enter. Insert your Acer disk formatter then reboot the machine. Follow the instructions to format partition 2. When done, insert your Acer System Disc then reboot. Follow the prompts to recover your system. You will need the Acer Recovery discs. Follow the prompts. You will see a progress screen. Hope this helps!

I had exactly the same problem. I tried several hard drives from 250Gb to 500Gb each with the same result. I had a netbook and a Zipad base with a DVD drive and a slot for a hard drive so I slipped a 250Gb hard drive into the pod, plugged it into my netbook, (running XP) and formatted the drive, (has to be NTFS). No problem after that, I have my Aspire 5520 back with a bigger, faster drive-the original was a Hitachi 120Gb running at 5400, the new drive is a Seagate 7200 250Gb drive. Restore takes a while, probably 15-20 minutes. Problem is that new drives are supplied unformatted which I sort of guessed after the second failed. Good Luck.
