I've got a Verizon cell phone. Don't know much about it. Don't use it
much.
Long story short: I've suspected that my private (off phone)
conversations were some how being monitored. Just last night I really
looked at my cell phone and realized I didn't understand a few things:
1) Why does that LED light keep blinking on and off?
But most importantly:
2) Why are there speaker holes on the outside of my phone (when it's
closed)?

I called Verizon technical support this morning, told him of my
suspicions and he told me that it sure enough was possible for our
conversations to be monitored with our cell phones on the coffee table
in front of us CLOSED. Please tell me that he misunderstood me and that
the above such monitoring is not possible.

green, phone on and you have a signal.
red, phone on and you don't have a signal
yellow, phone on and you are roaming
off, phone off

So the ring can get out.

He misunderstood.

What is very important to understand is that it is not the human
technology you should be worried about. The government, either
by itself, or very possibly in conjunction with aliens is monitoring
your brain waves. You don't even need to be conversing with
anyone audibly. This activity has been escalated following 911.
You really should be looking into some sort of head gear that
shields your brainwaves. A tin foil hat will work fairly well until
you can purchase something more adequate.

Kevin, What do you have to hide? I'm talking to my closed phone now. It's
like you always have a friend that wants to listen.

Sounds pretty paranoid to me to John but why did Verizon tell me that
and why ARE there speaker holes on the outside of the phone?

The holes are there for the "ringer".....not to eavesdrop on you or anyone
else.....

Call your cell phone and you'll be able to "hear" the ringer through what
you call speaker holes....

Some people say shiny side out is better, some say shiny side in.
I've never been able to tell the difference.

There is a "Voice Privacy" setting (On/Off) in my CDM9900 that was also
present in my last phone (9155 GPX). Can't tell you much about it other
than it can interfere with sound quality at times. Comment?

John: By the same token, what is so important about your conversations that
you think anybody within earshot should be interested in sharing? Hmmm?

It depends on whether you want to keep your own waves in or others'
out. Shiny side toward the waves. (Everybody knows that!)

Good point...
I will say the V710 has large openings for the speakerphone on the outside.
