Hi all!

About two weeks ago I booted my computer and was greeted with "AlienFXhookmanager64 has stopped working" error message. I noticed my computer slowing down, with cpu temps increasing by about ten degrees at idle - which didn't make any sense. So I tried to open the start menu, and ...nothing. It wouldn't open for about 2 minutes. Finally the error message came, "Windows explorer has stopped working". So I wasn't able to access any documents or programs (even shortcuts didn't work) until I found a way to quickly open up the cmd. From there I was able to access the control panel (when explorer didn't crash) and remove a cluster of trash programs. I restarted, and the problem persisted. I noticed a large amount of windows pop up with ads when I attempted to power off the computer. I would assume a regular virus, but I have McAfee, and have done several full system scans, unable to find anything. So I ended up disabling all services (after multiple tries) and that seems to help. However, this means that most of the programs on my computer don't work. Is this a virus, or some type of corruption of a system file?

Thank you!!

Hello Netflixandchill:

While you are still able to to derive some use from the system in its present state, I would consider seeking the professional assistance of a Malware Removal Expert. Of the many good ones, I would strongly recommend you read the locked/pinned topics within:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/

After you thoroughly understand what to expect, and what is expected from you, you may wish to open your own topic in:

At the successful conclusion of your session, you would do well to re-evaluate your computer disaster recovery plan with an eye towards filling system recovery and security shortcomings.

Good luck and best wishes to you.

Hi 1PW -
Thanks for the response!
1) I am able to start the computer in Windows Safe mode, however it consistently crashes
2) I don't have a backup to restore from, in fact I logged on to the computer to back it up when I discovered the virus.
3) No, I did not make a recovery media - many important photos and such have been added since though
4) I do have the original install cd

Thanks for the response! I definitely will try opening a thread over there, and will be better about backing up in the future. Thanks!
