Hello,

I had an Alienware M17x R2 pc with two GPUs (Radeons 5870) http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5870-Crossfire.29486.0.html

Unfortunately slave GPU died and master one started showing artifacts, so I decided to upgrade to single GPU - Nvidia GTX 580M. I was pretty sure it's going to work as I found video of completely identical upgrade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNGnOU_Ky-8

Before upgrading GPU I flashed new bios from A6 to A10 (newest one) and removed old GPU drivers. Did my upgrade and tried to turn on laptop without battery. Laptop returned one long beep and two shorts ones which means that gpu failure has occured. Since I can't blind flash or do anything with my PC in this state, I just put my old GPU back and everything is working as before.

1. Any ideas how could I make my Alienware M17x R2 to boot with Nvidia GTX 580m
Here are some numbers from my bought Nvidia GTX 580M card:
VBIOS ver: 70.24.2b.00.06
On chip: NVIDIA N12EGTX2-A1
03MF8R

P.S. Should I return this card because it's broken or is it completely on my end? I believe it shouldnt be my fault since I saw a lot of success stories with alienware m17x and nvidia gtx 580m gpu.

Hi,

Please do try these steps that may help.
- While the laptop is still using the old GPU, do a clean uninstall of the GPU software.
- Use this software to completely uninstall anything related to the old GPU.
- Here's the link: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
- Once uninstalled, turn off the laptop then install the new GPU then see if it work or not.
- If the laptop will load, install the GPU driver from the manufacturers site.

Thank You for your reply. I just tried putting GPU on a fresh windows 7 install. No luck, same symptoms.
