Solved! Alternative to HD DVR with DTV?

Hello,
I am a layperson interested in finding a "work-around" for recording programs in HD (and standard format)using my Direct TV provider without having to pay their newly increased, exhorbitant fee. Is there any news from 2011, versus the discussions I see here dated 2005? Any light you can shed on the subject is appreciated.

Using a video capture card or dongle and a large hard drive are still the most common and economical method.
