Hello,

I'm moving to Finland from the United States and I have a new Samsung
HLN617W HDTV-ready (with external tuner) 61 inch DLP television which of
course is NTSC format. I'd like to take it with me to Finland and I wonder
what kind of device I will need to convert finnish PAL formats while
retaining high quality picture.

The TV has following video inputs:

3 Composite video
1 DVD component video (Y, Pb, Pr) 480i, 480P
2 HDTV/DTV component video (Y, Pb, Pr) 1080i, 720P, 480P
2 RF (coaxial antenna)
3 S-Video
1 PC input (D-Sub 15 pin)XGA
1 DVI

Here in the states I get clearly the best picture using the DVI input from
my HDTV cable box.

It is my understanding that the 15-pin PC input could br connected to a
R.G.B. out from a DTV tuner with good results but I don't have the
opportunity to try it except with a PC.

I also have a Samsung SV-300W universal VCR that does the PAL to NTSC
conversion but it only has a s-video output. I guess it would work but I
want something better if possible.

So what are the TV signal formats and hardware like in Finland. And what can
I do to make my TV work there?

Thanks for your help!

Peter

Even if there were no compatibility problems, it will probably cost more
to move the set _safely_ from the US to Finland than the price of a new
TV when you get there (though video gear is a lot more expensive in
Europe than in America).

And you would probably never be able to sell an NTSC-only set in Europe.

Also, Europe is still dithering re HDTV and even digital in some places.
Whenever it does take off it will be 50hz, not 60hz, so a US HDTV will
be virtually useless over there.

I'd suggest selling the Samsung for whatever you can get, and buy a
small Sony direct-view set in Finland until you have a chance to explore
bigger-screen options.

Most Euro TVs are multistandard so you will be able to watch your NTSC
videos.

When I am overseas, I bypass entirely TV signal compatibility issues. I use NationPhone&TV's USA TV Abroad service. http://www.usatvabroad.com I get a 200 channel US Cable subscription with all major networks plus HBO and Showtime. Their set top box connect right any TV and the other end plugs into the internet. I never had to worry about hooking up local cable or whether it is a US TV. :)
