Android Malware Up 427 Percent Since July

These apps will then appear on the market with whatever description the developer submitted without ever going through any kind of verification process.

So I guess if I make an App that steals your personal information, but I call it a "free flashlight app that turns the screen white to illuminate the area" then people will DL it and as long as it actually does that it is also free to raid your personal info and you would never know.

So yes, it apparently is very hard to avoid shitty apps.

The problem isn't the "Android marketplace" or end-user laziness; it's a poorly-written O.S./platform which permits apps to easily do things within the platform they simply should not. To clarify, "a" solution is to force developers to submit their apps for scrutiny (and there may be a variety of reasons for doing this). However, there are also practical/philosophical reasons to *not* do this; to let the market "be the market." In ALL situations -- situations in which you have a platform which can be targeted for malicious software -- the 100% guaranteed-safe solution is to have an O.S. which simply does not support "unsafe" activities, or to permit such activities with clear, simple, practical/workable end-user approval. Every modern O.S., combined with a rich client (i.e. browser, with a "reasonable assortment of plug-ins) fails this test. Conversely, if we had environments like this, there would be no such thing as a virus. No popular end-user O.S./environment has been designed, ground-up, to be (in every relevant sense of the word) "secure." I believe we'll look back at this situation in 10-15 years like we look back on our old 12mpg cars. "What-the-hell were we thinking...?"

All android apps are shiet. Also the marketplace suck b@lls. I unfortunately bought an Antrix and I cannot wait until my contract is up so I can again get a decent smartphone. Take all of your crappy "open platform" apps and shove them up your arse. I'm leaving now to go take a crap in the toilet. It'll be just as useful as my android phone.

If there were 11 and there are 58 now, then (58/11)*100-1 equals a 427% increase. From what I see the options are:

July already had a lot of malware, so a 400%-jump since then cannot be a good thing.

Google needs a solution, ASAP.

Assuming 472% is the right number and that they didn't do some weird rounding to get there, the minimum is 18 of them through July 2011 and another 85 in four months since. In the grand scheme of things 103 pieces of malware among 100s of thousands of apps is pretty marginal, but I think it is the trend that they're looking at as concerning.

If it is these lowest numbers and malware increased at even half of this rate going forward, then in March there would be 346 and July, 1162, and a year from now, 3904 ... and that's assuming the lowest possible starting point given the information from the article.

At some point it becomes an out-of-control problem rather than a minor nuisance to the 'noobs'...

Without vetting these apps prior to release, simply put, the developer can lie about what the app does to get you to download it. Essentially, no "truth in advertising" is required, neither is the intent of the developers app even if it does perform the most basic of functions you are looking for. I HATE apple and feel that they limit the possibilities of their devices, but I feel totally at ease with my kids using them, especially with the restiction capabilities.
