Is the fact that it takes no time to learn to use something a good thing? No, because if it's so easy everyone can use it without any training, it means it lacks advanced features.

Simplicity in software is rarely a good thing. Most of the time, it just means they cut features down to the minimum.

And besides, learning to work with Android isn't that hard...

Those numbers do not include iPhone 4. It is expected to have less people buying iPhones just before a new iPhone launch. I´m really curious to see Q3 numbers...

[citation][nom]zachary k[/nom]"hey! androids are getting tethering! lets all buy androids!!! oh wait..."[/citation]

my wifes evo has free tethering after rooting. as for android sales go, the numbers would be extremely higher if samsung didn't shaft htc. there are android device shortages everywhere because of it.

as for the individual that mentioned iphone os is on only one device and only 1 network and sales would be higher if it was across all networks:

the reason it's on only 1 device, it's because jobs is a greedy little girl. plus all apple sheep flocked to att no matter how bad the service is just to buy an apple product. the difference in sales would not be as sbstantial as one might think because the att customers would just switch to the other carriers for better service.

let's not forget, the best OS is coming out in november for the US market. muhahahaha

does it bother you that there is a website that doesn't polish steve jobs knob like gizmodo and gang?

give us a break with your hatred towards windows and ati and go shine jobs knob

No, it has become a 'cesspool' of pragmatic realists.

We aren't ATI fanboys, we just happen to notice that ATI's current generation hardware produces less heat, isn't as noisy and consumes less power, all while offering better performance per dollar than Nvidia's current generation.

We aren't Windows fanboys, we just happen to notice that Windows 7 is far superior to its predecessors (nobody is a Vista fanboy here for example...) and in many ways also superior to MacOSX and Linux. For starters, it's the only viable gaming OS. Second, you're not tied to hardware with weak GPU's and a high price tag like you are with Mac. It supports far more software than Linux or Mac. It can't be denied it's the better OS for most home users.

And we also notice the iPhone can't compete with current generation Android phones. iOS only covers one segment of the market, Android covers them all. Phones with a price tag similar to that of the iPhone, like the Droid X or HTC Evo, sport better hardware than the iPhone. Android isn't as locked as iOS; it can be customized any way you want to. Android is (mostly) open source, iOS isn't.

We don't blindly adore Jobs, that's all. It's not because you dislike A that you must be a fanboy of B per se. You can just be pragmatic person examining A and B and concluding B is the better option.

Apple = 1 phone to rule them all
Android = 12 hobbits

BTW, I just ordered three iPhone4 for my family plan but my co-workers bought two blackberry and 1 EVO 4G so I guess the universe is balanced again.

You show your own hypocrisy and prove FLanighan's point when you "blindly" assume that the only reason anyone would ever buy an iPhone is because they blindly adore Steve Jobs. I happen to think Jobs is a class-A douche bag and yet the iPhone was the very first Apple product Ive ever spent money on. But it couldnt possibly be because I did a ton a research at the time and the 8GB iPhone was $100 cheaper than the next best phone, that was a sh1tty upgraded version of the sh1tty phone I already had.

BTW, I do not know why people are complaining about AT&T. I went from T-mobile to AT&T for the better service. From what I can tell, Verizon do have an advantage in the city (island of Manhattan) but all 4 carriers are about equal outside the city with AT&T and Verizon have better coverage in rural area.

Glad to be part of the overthrow, i just switched over from Windows Mobile (had Touch Pro, a Mogul (HTC PPC6800) before that and the PPC6700 before that one. I absolutely loved the Touch Flo interface for windows mobile but this perty EVO is better in every way shape and form

I don't assume adoration for Steve Jobs and Apple in general is the primary reason for everyone to buy an iPhone. There are people with a lot of money but an extremely limited knowledge of technology and the iPhone is perfect for that market segment.

Oh and your point is invalid. Just after the iPhone launched, it was a rational thing to buy it. After all, it had very little competition and was excellent in its day. Today however, it's a mere fact that the iPhone is technologically overtaken by its competitors.

I work in IT and support Iphones, Driods, Blackberry, Palm and I must say that Droid just does. It works, no bullshit no excuses. Apps are great and app dev is great too. Iphones suck with Microsoft integration in comparison to Droid OS. Hey I have a great idea make your shit work with the overwhelming leader in business productivity software and operating systems so that people like myself like them enough to recommend them to my users. Informed word of mouth sells just as well as hipster conformity. FU APPLE.

iPhone is 1 Phone,1 Company,1 OS,1 Carrier versus a plethora of phones, made by many different companies, grant it, the same OS, and many different carriers to choose from. To me, it's more impressive that the iphone was ever the "one" to beat, given the narrow scope of it's placement in the market. The speed at which a 3 year old phone took the world by storm is still something not matched yet. (Just zipping up my flame jumper) Let me state for the record that I have an iphone and a windows mobile phone. I'm not a fan-boy of anything, except maybe for boobies.

So it's either we blindly adore Steve Jobs, or we are technological retards? You sir, need to close your mouth, before your knee reaches your lips. I, for example, do NOT have alot of money. And I'm certainly not "very limited" knowledge-wise regarding technology. I'm in the military. My current billet is Audio/Video, Phone, VTC, and IT support for my area. I wouldn't claim to be an expert, but I know far more than the average, and above average consumer would know, or ever know. I'd even venture to say I know more about it than you... But this thread only needs one person assuming whatever they want :)

You talk about the iphone and android from a techie view point. Seriously.. stop that. The average consumer has absolutely no clue what "open source" means, nor do they honestly care. At all. They want a phone they use to call with, that has pretty little features, and pretty little buttons, and long long long battery life all wrapped up in a pretty little shell. The average android user does not root their phone. Does not customize the shit out of it like it allows. We, the techs, can, and tend to ALOT more than the average person.. but what we enjoy is a massively different world.. the average person doesn't scroll articles on THG. Ever. They watch football. Drink beer. Play with their kids, Go to school. Check their facebook. Go to the movies, and hang out with their friends. And the whole time, they want, once again:

"They want a phone they use to call with, that has pretty little features, and pretty little buttons, and long long long battery life all wrapped up in a pretty little shell."

Case in point.. almost every friend or person I've met to date that has a droid has yet to give me one solid reason for it being better. The most common answer so far is a three-way tie between:

"My friend X said its way better. He researched it" Or the equiv.
"The Rep at the X store recommended it." Smooth move.
"I heard its alot better and cheaper." >.> Yawn.

Now.. I could be making this all up.. kinda like your assumptions. Or not. Who knows. But I can at least tell that your assumptions are way off base.

Apple just mis-managed their market, or just didn't understand it. They also delivered a product with some flaws (both iPhone 4 and iPad) - flaws they knew about prior to release. This is where Apple went wrong:

1. Stayed with AT&T exclusively
2. Released two products with significant flaws (iPhone 4 and iPad)
3. Crippled existing iPhone 3G customer base with the OS4 update (slowness)
4. Didn't understand that mobile device users don't have a lot of tolerance nor brand loyalty

I had an iPhone 4, returned it, too small, not as fast as I thought it would be, and the antenna issue was much worse that I thought it would be. My wife just picked up a Droid X -- it's not perfect either, some bugs and worky interface issues and PC interface is not so good, but dang it's fast, thin, and a good sized display!

I'm back on my iPhone 3G and playing the waiting game -- I'm looking into Android EVO 4G but coverage is so limited for California (Merced, Modesto, Stockton, Visalia and that's it) that it's just yet another phone that doesn't deliver it all in one package. It's clear to me that none of the mobile device manufacturers have got it right yet. So I wait ...

[citation][nom]Silmarunya[/nom]You honestly believe people wanting an iPhone wouldn't buy it because of the carrier? Come on...Android has simply shown to be a better OS in every way: it's open source, it covers every end of the market, rather than just the high end, its phones have the best hardware specs in every market segment, including the iPhone range, there are at least as much apps, the development cycle for updates is far shorter and the user has much more freedom (Flash anyone?)[/citation]

Actually it would be a lot higher because teenagers that are stuck on their family plan. Like me, I am stuck on my parents AT&T plan and I want a good android phone but I cant because it would cost $60 more a month.
