antenna follies

Well, after much effort I was able to find an antenna spot that got
consistent indoor reception on most digital channels... but now I'm
hosed on a whole new reception problem: I bought my first cell phone
and it can't connect from my apartment.

My friends are telling me to just return the phone and try to get my
money back, if I want it to be able to ring at home.

I keep wondering if there's some way to put some dipoles outside and
feed them in here... I do get like two bars of reception in the
building's parking lot.

There aren't any others as cheap as this one, though. Being
unemployed, it was pretty much this or nothing. Or I should say, this
or a pager... and pager companies are rapidly dying off.

There are some spots in my apt where I can at least hear a ring.....
I'm still undecided about whether to keep it.

No. Listen to your friends. You have a good reason for a refund.
Maybe there's another phone service with better coverage.

Probably better take a look at your contract. I don't think any of the
wireless phone company's guarantee in home coverage. However, some of them
are starting to carry repeater's (Sprint) that can be used to boost the
signal. Antenna outside, plugs into wall outlet inside with amplifier that
will give good coverage dropout the hose. Don't know if it's on the streets
yet, but I've read that it's coming.

And how is a phone that doesn't work better than "nothing"?!?!

You buy cheap, you generally get what you paid for.

Also, many phones have settings that limit the phone to specific cell
carriers. You might be able to go into the menus and select "any carrier"
instead of "preferred only". You may be surprised that the cell signal
instantly jumps to maximum.

Woops, it turns out Cingular had something almost as good, and is
receivable here. I took the other phone back. Now I may have new
financial troubles and the best value choice may be good old dependable
"Nothing" brand...

Go on Ebay and search for an external antenna for your model phone, even if
your phone doesn't have a specific connector for it. You might be
surprised.
