Question Any useful instant translate app on Android phone?

Is there an instant professional translation software that I can use?
I recently chatted with a Brazilian on WhatsApp. Due to language problems, he spoke Portuguese and I spoke English. I could only copy his message into Google Translate, read it clearly, then input my answer, convert it into Portuguese and forward it to him.

Is there an app or any technical means that can allow me to understand his language directly on WhatsApp? Thank you in advance

There's a bunch of translation apps in the Google Play Store that claim to be able to handle WhatsApp translation. However, I've not used any of them to say which is best. That said, if you use GBoard you can just highlight the text and have Google Translate do it within WhatsApp itself. Alternatively, you can also just screencap it and have Google Lens translate it. Probably faster than copy and pasting.
