Read the review in the SJ Mercury. I think he said something like it
would take off eventually, but now it's a pain even for techies to use.

If one has set up their hacked TiVo for streaming, there is no need for
such a device.

Except that there is no sub.

Err no, the box only streams what you've already got. You have to get a
signal for it from somewhere and that's going to have a subscription cost.

actually i've found that streaming is useless unless you have SERIOUS
bandwidth available for uploading. my 384k up simply isn't enough to
stream data off my tivo if i want to watch it somewhere outside my
house. that's the one advantage of this slingbox, it can recompress
the video to use less bandwidth on the fly apparently.

Err, so? You have that with Tivo today. No one is talking about
Cable/Sat/Other sub. The no sub comment refers to the service fee that
you pay today to Tivo, I didnt think I needed to specify that.

But it wouldnt get as good a quality as a DirecTiVo.

That's not the point.

The slingbox is setup so you have remote access to your TV recording
device (could be a VCR even, though a DVR would be far better) over
nearly *any* network connection. Direct access to a hacked DTivo isn't
going to be very usable (at least for streaming video) over your link if
you are limited to 128 Kbps or 256 Kbps. The slingbox adapts on the fly
to available bandwidth.

It seems to me to be equivalent of XP's "Remote Desktop", but for your
video source. Both offer remote access and control and both adapt to
network conditions by reducing features and upping compression for lower
bandwidths. All-in-all a nice idea. RD works well in practice (great
for remote administration), better than I might have expected. The
slingbox may be similar for the same reasons.

But since I've paid lifetime, I pay no ongoing fee to Tivo and have more than
recouped the lifetime fee if I were paying monthly (i.e. I'm past
where monthly for X months = price of lifetime).

I saw Lassie. It took me four shows to figure out why the hairy kid never
spoke. I mean, he could roll over and all that, but did that deserve a series?
