look guys, there are a few facts here...

1-AT&T's network is bad; I live in NYC, and my phone rings 1/2 time I get a call and I miss 1/3 of my text messages. The phone switches between Edge and 3G all day.
2-AT&T MIGHT (MIGHT MIGHT MIGHT) lose exclusive rights to the iPhone, but Verizon won't see the iPhone any time soon. There is currently no iPhone that has a CDMA radio, no where in the world, and there isn't a hidden CDMA version as it would be registered in the FCC database.

I have no problems with my iphone in the Sacramento area, maybe I am just one of the lucky ones that live in an area where service is good, but even when I travel to other places such as SF, Pheonix, LA, Miami its fine there as well . To be honost, all mobile carriers are ripping us off.

I guess that means its coming to T-Mobile? Um... yay?!? I'll stick with Android thanks.

The problem with Verizon and CMDA is the lack of a SIM card. My boss broke his Verizon phone, and had to carry his wifes phone around all day, and kept getting her calls, cause it was her number. I can take my sim card and stick it in any phone and bam, my number. Works especially well if I ever break my phone (hope that doesn't happen), or go somewhere I can't take a camera phone (much more often).

With GSM, iPhone owners can remove their SIM card and put it in a real phone when they need to make a call, then move it back into the iPhone when they need to look like a pretentious, know-nothing prick.

actually, verizon does support sim cards. they have world edition models for overseas use. sprint as well.

What no one has mentioned is that Verizon is CDMA technology and AT&T is GSM; 80% of the global mobile market uses the GSM standard(check it on Wikipedia)... Therefore you build a phone that you can sell in as many places as possible and has as much coverage as possible. Verizon is US only, unless you use one of their CDMA/GSM phones which look like a waffle iron... I have an iPhone, I HATE AT&T, but I also realize the realities of selling a product world wide, The US is not the only market people focus on...

I love the ignorant flaming posts. I also love hearing the intelligent posts that add info to the discussion.
For those that live in NY, I feel for you, as that area is known to have issues due to the unbalanced number of users per tower.
I am satisfied with the service (I wish it was less expensive for the data plan though), I was even able to get two activation fees waived because "I didn't know I was going to be charged activation and this confuses me", which was $70 total. As far as network speed I average 140 KB/s down, 40 KB/s up, which is actually on par with my dsl I have now (except the ping is huge using 3G). I live in the Dayton area FYI. If you have numbers, (AT&T, Verizon, etc) I think more people would love to hear them than the QQing.

I, personally, have no issues with the ATT network and my iPhone. I cannot speak for everyone though. I do not live in a major city where most of the issues seems to arise. Also, my iPhone is on a Wi-Fi network 95% of the time. But for the passed year I have had only 1 dropped call, and that was because I was WAY out in no-mans land. My overall experience has been good though.

I will say that if the iPhone ever comes to Verizon, I will hop on that bandwagon, for the fact that all my family and friends use Verizon. (unlimited mobile to mobile)

Apple's yesterday earning report shows the iphone sales were down. The stock will go down hill next quarter earning if Apple still only offers through AT&T.

People say all kinds of stuff about the various networks all the time, but it doesn't make it true for the person living down the street from them.

I have a Verizon family plan at home with the Wife and teenage son on it. I also used to have a AT&T work phone for years until this past year in the spring when the company went to verizon phones due to people in the company wanting to get their personal phones at discount though a company discount program.

I always got better reception on AT&T than on my Verizon phone. At home my phone works ok most of the time (samsung omnia) but my wife's phone (samsung alias 2) and son's phone (samsung juke) sometimes can't talk unless they walk out on the front porch. There is a brand new cellular tower less than three blocks from us too.

We've tried a bunch of Motorola and LG phones prior to deciding on the the samsung models and my wife is on her second in the alias line now and loves the phone. But we hate the network most of the time.

Text messages between us sometimes don't show up for a couple of days, missed calls and voice messages show up hours after they happened with no sign of having a call at the time. And that is not in our home, that is running around town where we have a good signal and are making calls on the phones. The Verizon network is very bad at times.

Then add to that the fact that Verizon has a long history of gimping their phones application and feature wise, plus the fact that they nickel and dime you to death making everything they can into an additional charge.

I don't think their exclusive with AT&T is as bad as people make it out to be and I think Verizon would be suffering just as much under the load of all those iPhones sold in the US being on their network.
Plus the iPhone and apps would have been much more tied down under Verizon if they were the first company to get it. I really can't believe they are letting Android or WebOS phones on the network without gimping them in some way and I don't believe it would have happened without the iPhone being on AT&T.

I don't understand why everyone thinks Apple will make a CDMA iPhone. CDMA (not WCDMA) is a crapy tech no simultaneous voice & data, markedly higher transmit power requirements, noticeably lower sound quality, High licensing fees to Qualacom.

The biggest deal beaker for me how slow Verizon and Sprints Networks are for data. My friend works for Sprint and thought his Hero was the best phone ever till his cable when out one night and he decided to tether he top out at around 1.2Mb down sitting in the same room I was pulling down 4.8Mb (I'm in Miami and yes we have HSDPA 7.2 transmitters here)

Im sorry to tell you it makes no sense to build a CDMA iPhone all it would do is drive up the manufacturing cost so they can support a stander that will be replaced buy the only 2 major users within the next few years.

10 years ago I was in love with the Nokia communicator line but the GSM network was crap in my area did I demand Nokia make a CDMA modal just for me. NO I just didn't get one because it did not meet my needs. If you live or frequent somewhere where AT&T's network is crap DONT GET an iPhone.

Funny that the iPhone users are the ones complaining the most seeing as all those steve jobs wanabes are the problem, donloading all their stupid apps so their phone moo's or pours beer when they turn it over and other worthless apps, I actually can't wait to move to a carrier without the iphone because the iphone users cripple the network so much, it used to be so much better before.

If AT&T were to file their lawsuit against Verizon's "there's a map for that" campaign now, it would have been even easier for Verizon to get a dismissal. (which they got anyway)

jeez...AT&T must be paying Apple a lot of money to say this crap...AT&T seriously needs to work on its egotistic issues...it needs to admit how in-need of an upgrade its infrastructure is...

[citation][nom]soldier37[/nom]AT&T and iPhone 3gs 32gb owner/user here and no issues. Verizon rejected the iPhone and is only for girls and homos. The rest are playing catch up,wanna be iPhones makes me laugh. Blackberries are for yuppie wanna be losers. Stop your whining get a life leaving hate comments on something you know nothing about![/citation]

Someone hasn't heard of the Nexus One...

It's amusing reading all the Verizon fanboism going on here, really. ATT has issues, yes, but the part in the article about att having the most 3G subscribers is true.

The thing most people don't realize, if folks left en masse for Big V, their network wouldn't fare any better than ATT's did at the release of the iFone 3G.

Coverage =/= Throughput

Personally I'd like to see Verizon's network crumble, not because I have anything against Verizon, but moreso to see Big V fanbois whine when their droid's running at Edge speeds because of lack of throughput.

Food for thought.

I was a Verizon customer, with a really great little no thrills cell phone. In the metro area and suburbs of the major East Coast city I liv in , Verizons coverage area was ok. Not fantastic, or even great, but good. But I left Verizon, and not because I wanted an iPhone. Now have an iPhone, and AT&T. The coverage is ok, good, about equal to Verizon.

Do I think the iPhone should be available to both networks? YES!!!!
Would I switch back to Verizon if it was? Maybe.

Who could offer me the better deal, that is what would make up my mind. And with compatition, there would be deals to be had.
