I may be a little bit biased but it smacks of dity tactics on apples part... bit like a "oo you need an iphone 4" type thing.

Is the update an option that people will be asked or is it something you have to manually choose to do ?

My 3GS is slow! Camera app takes 5-10 seconds to load now and all my other apps are buggy. So not happy with the last "update".

My iPhone 3G is exhibiting lag as well, especially in the Settings menu. This will be my last iPhone product. The world is catching up to Apple.

I wonder if the issue is related to assembly instructions and the way memory swaps occur. Which would put a lot of pressure on the CPU. Even though the features may not change doesn't mean that there are not changes that impact the way the actual hardware performs on different silicon. This used to be a chronic problem for Palm back in the day between versions of the Treo. However I have seen the 3g have issues on version 3.x.x including slow texting, hanging apps, and crashing apps during loading. However not an issue on the 3gs with the same versions pre v4. Even on apps that used to work great with the 3g. Has to be software related in that case. Something is either running in the background, the hardware doesn't like the native code it's asked to execute, etc. But since none of us have the source code and processor instruction sets we'll never know. Maybe someone will figure that part out on their own?

Apple have also broken WEP WiFi on iOS4. My 3g could barely connect unless right by the router and my new 4 failed to connect at all.

Changed from WEP to WPA2 (finally!) and all is good.

Apple fail I am afraid.

I suspect foul play here too. My 3G runs like crap on OS4 and there's really no reason for it. Wow I have folders now and for that I copped an overall speed loss. Get it right Apple coz it doesn't "just work" anymore. Samsung Galaxy S here I come.

Look you lot, stop moaning! i have a 1st. gen ipod touch and I cant have folders nor the latest firmware update because of the age of the device.
My only option is to leave well alone and continue or buy the latest touch, fully compatable.
Same goes with the phone, upgrade? or leave well alone.
IMO I would wait till the antenna issue is resolved, hardware wise, not with elastic bands nor girdles and go for iphone4.
I never went with the phone myself due to overpriced contract charges, simply not worth the money, I chose android and have never looked back.
I would say that the android knocks spots off the iphone4 at present and even more so as more and more apps become available on the market.
however, its horses for courses, you buy a smartphone for your way of life and if the iphone meets your needs then once the issues are resolved it will be a cracking device albeit at a cost.

Yes, I have the 3G model, and it runs horribly since upgrading. I press "calendar", count to seven...and then it pops up. It's quite ridiculous, but I'm pleased to hear that it is at least being looked into. Otherwise I was going to try and force-downgrade, but I wanted to give it some time for them to 'hopefully' look into it -- at least it seems that they are. Will be interested in hearing how this pans out; a 2 year old phone shouldn't be crippled by minimal 'new features'.

The iPhone 3G is absolutely slower with iOS 4.1 and the GPS doesn't work doesn't work anymore....there are a lot of folks with the issue.

Steve Jobs should have tried the upgrade himself on a 3G before saying that Android is too fragmented and that RIM doesn't know software. Apparently Apple has been taking technical advice from Microsoft.
