Texting has a lot of delay, the phone runs much hotter, and openning apps takes considerably longer. I've been debating downgrading my OS lately.

[citation][nom]Strider-Hiryu_79[/nom]Don't worry a free case will probably fix this too.[/citation]

But first Jobs needs to state : "This happens in all phones, not just the iPhone." Then proceed to create a site listing various phones with OS upgrades that have performance loss.

Wow.....I was just thinking this myself a few days ago. I find my self restarting my 3GS almost every other day. It has become really really slow. Sometimes it takes forever to even start the camera.

I thought maybe my phone was broken (and even considered buying the iphone 4 or the evo). But I think I will just wait for apple to fix this problem first.

I had a iPhone 3G and it was always slow. Browser was slow, email was slow, most apps weren't too slow, but over all a pretty poor performance. I had talked to most other people I knew that had specifically iPhone 3G and they had similar results. Although in my case, I think I had a defective phone that ironically lost it's little mind, via the grey screen of death, right around the end of the contract and no I didn't drop it it the toilet either ;-). I have HTC EVO now and it is way better and less restrictive than iPhone. Don't think I'll switch back to iPhone either, unless something earth shattering appears from them. Although, in this day and age, there is really not much difference between iPhone and a decently powered Android (EVO, Incredible, Droid X, Captivate,...)

Yep, I have the problem with my iPhone 3G. And I agree this IS Apple's way of forcing iPhone 3G users to upgrade to an iPhone 4. I returned my iPhone 4 because of reception problems and flakey data transfers while surfing with the phone in my hand. I'll see what else comes out on the market and/or wait for the "real" fix to the iPhone 4 later this year Nov/Dec.

How Apple (more specifically Steve Jobs) have dealt with the iPhone 4 and iPad issues has left the door open for the competition -- which IMHO is a good thing, don't want them to become Microsoft like.

I like to keep an open mind when it comes to computing hardware and mobile devices, unlike 95% of Tom's readers that live and die by brand loyalty (which really doesn't serve them well).

The antenna problem has nothing to do with signal strength, I'm pretty sure it's a design flaw. I say this, because a few days ago, I tested this on my friend's iPhone 4 at our house... There is an AT&T cell tower within line of site, less then 500ft from our house, so there is no way we have weak signal, as every phone I've ever had in this house, always had full strength. And from where I tested this, you could see the tower through the window...

Anyways, my friend couldn't reproduce the problem, but I simply touched my finger to the spot on the antenna, and after 10 seconds, the phone lost all 3G signal, then switched to Edge, with 1 bar, sometimes zero. Removed finger, and within 10 seconds, got full bars on 3G.

I'm pretty sure this problem is more tied to skin capacitance, then weak signal strength, as my hands were warm and moist, and my friend's hands were usually cold and dry.

I have a 3G and performance varies. Sometimes is despicably slow other times it preforms just fine. Overall, it is significantly slower.

I often find turning the phone completely off and on again will resolve the issue for a short while.

[citation][nom]tayb[/nom]Ah. Beautifully predictable. Overnight circle jerk among Apple haters and the comments section blows up to 3 pages in length. Don't you guys get tired of grabbing each others dicks and trolling the news articles bashing Apple? Do you seriously not see how pathetic that is?[/citation]

Did you even read most of these comments? They're mostly Apple users complaining, not Apple haters, although some of them may become Apple haters after their recent experiences. Do you expect no one to complain about a massive performance drop in older phones?

[citation][nom]justinxtreme[/nom]My 3GS isn't slow at all unlike you people are saying. But my iPhone 3G is slow as f!!!! Seriously the 3GS has 200MHz more speed than the 3G and just double the RAM it's kind of wierd how that much makes so much difference.... My 3GS performs as snappy as my iPhone 4. Meanwhile the 3G it's not even close.[/citation]
I'm going to have to call BS on this. I've deployed iOS4 on 29 iPhone 3GS and the only situation where they didnt get slower is when they are left bone stock, with no multitasking apps other than what it comes with. In every instance even when the phone is stock I have observed odd "stutters" on certain things, and there is also now a huge delay / randomly NOT switching off 3G. Overall, the 3GS performs *OK* but I can say for 100% certainty, its NOT as good as the iPhone 4 once you actually put some stuff on it. Easiest way to observe the slowdown: Install and run pandora in the background. Instant stutter. Add more stuff in such as Skype running in the background, and it starts get real slow.
I'm simply waiting for Verizon, then I'll be jumping this iTrash boat. If theyd only hurry up and move to my area.. (I must be in the only area to not offer Verizon service at all, very frustrating.)

[citation][nom]blackened144[/nom]Wow. For a bunch of Apple haters who complain about all the Apple related articles, you guys cant stop from posting can you?[/citation]

Same for you. Read the actual comments. These are mostly Apple iPhone users complaining about the performance hit on their older phones. If they own one of these phones, they can't be haters, even if they may become one after their recent experiences.

my 3GS has been running slower since the update. and I've had other issues, related to bluetooth and some apps. I hope they tweak the OS in the next update to fix the problems.

By the way, dont know if it's old news or not, but here's a potential fix for some of you guys who are experiencing slowness:

"To remedy the sluggish performance (or at least one cause of it) go to “Settings->General->Home Button->Spotlight Search-> deselect every option” and this will stop background indexing on the phone" (http://www.neowin.net/news/sluggish-ios-4-performance-on-the-3g-we-have-the-fix)

I also have a 3g with the 4.0 OS and I've noticed a dramatic increase in lag when opening program and typing. I hope there's a fix soon otherwise I'll have to look into downgrading the OS.
