Well glad to see some interesting discussion but by incompetent I meant dumbed down.
It's so basic and really I feel like it is nothing except a fancy form of launching applications. The OS is not all that functional and relies on 3rd party hacks to bring any form of functionality to it, in trade for which you void your warranty.
And to those of you saying im just another Android fanboy I will admit I am, and I love my galaxy S, but even before I knew much about android I already found iOS quite incompetent. There are so many things that you should expect an OS to do for you just out of the box, like tethering, proper file browser, task manager, TRUE multitasking (not that fake excuse for multitasking that Apple has) etc... List goes on.
When the iOS and the first iPhone came out back in 2007 it was nice, but it hasn't changed much, the OS is pretty much the same, and it's not great. Android and other OSes evolve as time goes by, they bring bucket-loads of changes, improvements and added features every time there is a new release.
And to those of you are saying that iOS is the most competent tablet OS out there... well... no. Apple is not creative. Filling up a homescreen with app shortcuts is anything but creative, they have dumbed it down so much. Filling a homescreen with app shortcuts is a waste of screen real estate. I want my homescreens to be more like a desktop with widgets where I can see everything I need to know in one glance.
"iOS is like a fancy windows start menu"
I get bored of playing with my friends iPods and iPads an iDevices after about 30 seconds, because thats all you need to figure out everything it can do. To this day after 5 months of owning a Samsung Galaxy S I am still not bored of it, and can keep myself entertained without any apps on it besides those that came stock. I can't do that on an iDevice, and yes, I am easily amused!
