Well glad to see some interesting discussion but by incompetent I meant dumbed down.
It's so basic and really I feel like it is nothing except a fancy form of launching applications. The OS is not all that functional and relies on 3rd party hacks to bring any form of functionality to it, in trade for which you void your warranty.
And to those of you saying im just another Android fanboy I will admit I am, and I love my galaxy S, but even before I knew much about android I already found iOS quite incompetent. There are so many things that you should expect an OS to do for you just out of the box, like tethering, proper file browser, task manager, TRUE multitasking (not that fake excuse for multitasking that Apple has) etc... List goes on.

When the iOS and the first iPhone came out back in 2007 it was nice, but it hasn't changed much, the OS is pretty much the same, and it's not great. Android and other OSes evolve as time goes by, they bring bucket-loads of changes, improvements and added features every time there is a new release.

And to those of you are saying that iOS is the most competent tablet OS out there... well... no. Apple is not creative. Filling up a homescreen with app shortcuts is anything but creative, they have dumbed it down so much. Filling a homescreen with app shortcuts is a waste of screen real estate. I want my homescreens to be more like a desktop with widgets where I can see everything I need to know in one glance.

"iOS is like a fancy windows start menu"

I get bored of playing with my friends iPods and iPads an iDevices after about 30 seconds, because thats all you need to figure out everything it can do. To this day after 5 months of owning a Samsung Galaxy S I am still not bored of it, and can keep myself entertained without any apps on it besides those that came stock. I can't do that on an iDevice, and yes, I am easily amused!

Not to mention Apple did not get it's tablet popular because of the OS that is on it, it was popular simply because of having the rotten apple with a bite taken out on the back, has nothing to do with the OS. It's more of a status symbol than a functional machine.

I think if people looked really objectively at the iPad, they'd realize that it's generally a good product. There is always going to be sacrifices in any product in regards to price, weight, battery life, app availability, platform openness. I think the iPad strikes a nice balance.

I mean you could go for more open platform with Android over iOS but be more susceptible to malware because of less stringent app checking with Android. Or you could go for more applications available with a Windows tablet but sacrifice battery life with it's Atom processor. You could get higher hardware specs with the Xoom but pay a higher price. There are pro and cons to each. Clearly some products are better suited some people more than others.

I like the form factor of a tablet and I think I'm considering an iPad. I've almost pulled the trigger on an Android tablet but this new rev of the iPad has hooked. I love using my little Atom netbook but it's not really the right device for reading eBooks in bed. At just under 3lbs it's also twice as heavy as the iPad and has about half the battery life.

I don't really like the closed nature of the iOS app market but I do applaud the fact that Apple has helped drive down the price of apps. With such a large user base, developers are finding they can make more money with quality apps selling high volume as opposed to selling fewer apps at higher prices. But dislike that Apple is trying to muscle in on iApp subscription revenue. I think that's pretty shady.

I have no reply. I just feel this perfect comment needed repeating again.

[citation][nom]jasonh8806[/nom]I don't see how the OS is incompetent. I own an android phone and I have more problems with that OS than I have with any other OS save older Windows. Just b/c you hate Apple doesn't mean that everything they make is crap. Get over yourself[/citation]
If you're having that many problems with that phone, it could be because your hardware is defective, not because of the OS. Or, maybe you just can't use an OS that is a tad more complicated that iOS, who knows... Android is easy enough to operate without being a genius, but also is offering far more functionality than iOS will ever offer. I have used both and I could not go back to iOS for the life of me. At the end of the day, pretty hardware (what Apple is good at) does NOT make up for a crippled experience.

[citation][nom]xbeater[/nom]I'm sorry but every iProduct bores me... Their incompetent OS bores me to hell[/citation]
Than why the hell are trolling here, so you can bore us to death?

i call it the ipad 1.5, not very impressed, same screen size and resolution, 2 very low quality cameras by the sounds of it compared to the motorola xoom and galaxy tab 10.1, 5MP and 8MP respectively. As usual no usb, microsd, flash. By the time the Ipad 3 comes out there will be a motorola xoom 2, samsung galaxy tab 10.1 2 etc. It seems like Apple just threw in a bunch of standard things in to the original Ipad to keep everyone happy

[citation][nom]Cirdecus[/nom]I agree, you're confusing "incompetent" with "controlling". You're trying to use a smart word that doesn't fit here. The OS is the most competent tablet OS available. You may not like the fact that its a "closed environment" but that doesn't take away from the fact that its the most competent OS available. If your other OS favorites were competent, they would create an more open OS that has the same awesome design as the iOS, but guess what? They can't. They're not the smart or creative[/citation]

Again, you said that the OS is "incompetent" Now you're changing the argument to something else.[/citation]

not creative? You're hilarious and are obviously oblivious to the world outside. Why do you think every company is following right behind apple in both the smartphone and tablet markets? Is it because apple wasn't creative? Every other company should be embarrassed at how they're playing follow the leader and the fact that no other company had the creativity to create these breakthrough devices is saddening.

This iPad 2 actually is how the iPad (1) should had been made, so I'd say it's a debugged / improved version rather than an generation upgrade.

For people who don't like try and fail buying new technology, iPad 2 is finally to make decision to buy one. For those who have already owned it, logical just wait for iPad 3, but if buying another one doesn't hurt the wallet, that makes Apple good business.

I'm not Apple fan, now looking to get an iPad 2 for on-road calendar and note, map search, and to keep girlfriend's mouth shout while i'm driving.

I will check again one year later and not to hesitate switching side if Android to have improved and become stable leading platform. But for this generation of all the tablets, iPad 2 is "my best" option.

Haters.. The whole lot of 'em. "But my Daddy is better than your Daddy!!" >.> Just a bunch of childish whining is all I hear. iCult. crApple. etc etc. So what if you don't like their products. Don't buy them. Leave all those who DO want to buy them the heck alone. I don't go around buying crap that I don't have a use for, and I most certainly do my research/shop around before I purchase something. And most people do. Yes, most certainly there are some people that purchase things just for status alone.. But I'm sorry.. Most people don't outside of clothing and accessories. And then again, most people's lives don't revolve around tech, and electronics, and epeen vs epeen internet combat. Tablets are not so expensive that only the rich can have them, however they are obviously expensive enough that most people have to save up for them. Bugdet for a bit to afford them. Planning. Etc. And here you ignorant few are. And yes, so very few you guys actually are. Because the only people I have *ever* heard anywhere diss apple products have been on the internet. Ever. Which can only mean one of two things.

Either we out number ya'll.. In which case I feel obligated to inform ya'll that we, the majority, don't care for your opinion. Ya'll are, mostly, childish about your anti-apple rants and.. We do not agree with you. Go hate somewhere else and myob.

Or two..

Ya'll say one thing in person.. But then say another on the internet.. Which just makes ya'll pathetic two faced liars.

Funny thing is.. I think they are both correct. I've talked to far too many people, at far too many tech/computer and science functions in the general consumer, and even defense sector, to even begin to properly estimate how many opinions I've heard on the matter. And none of them sounded like the childish banter I see on this site day in and day out..

Grow. Up. Already.

And on that note.. I need more redbull.

Man... they really are professionals when it comes to creating hype. They're starting it for the ipad3 before 2 is even out yet.

Fanboy.

Funny. I hear that kind of talk about Apple all the time. Just yesterday I was in a computer store and two technicians AND the owner were bashing Apple just like people do on this site. They can't stand Macs and the owner had to jump through way too many hoops to try to get a contract to sell and repair their products. He called them an elitist company with their noses in the air yet they only sell fisher price toys.

Perhaps you have not talked to as many people as you claim.

You sir, are quite wrong to think apple isn't tech. Perhaps its not the earth-shattering, mind numbingly awesome technology *you* prefer to call tech.. But when I read the word tech.. I obviously have a more open and broad definition.. One more aligned with the dictionary than a elitist definition. Being narrow minded isn't good. But regardless, do I see this kind of banter on all the articles about japanese watches? Or how about the wire fraud article? Or any of the other non tech articles? Negative. It's apple articles that get the hate, plain and simple. And then the funny thing is.. While you are all bashing the crap out of Apple and Jobs.. The *second* he might be terminally ill.. ya'll turn ya'lls noses back towards the ground and express sorrow, sympathy, and respect. Which just makes me laugh my ass of. It's humorous to watch the two-sided antics you guys have. Hate hate hate hate.. What your sick now?

*Really wishes that IE didn't just cut off 90% of my post. But whatever. Blind mini-hitlers gonna hate no matter what I say. I guess I'll just have to try to ignore the childish antics pc elitists make.*
