In respect to gaming and high definition video (Blu-ray) playback, which APUs (the graphics processor part) currently used in laptop computers are generally better: AMD or Intel, given the CPUs are equivalent? In other words, if I'm choosing between an AMD and Intel APU from the same price category, which one is more likely going to have a better GPU?
My impression is that AMD must be better given they own ATI, which used to specialise in GPUs.

I am asking this because I am thinking of buying a new laptop in the next several months, so I'm starting doing a research.

Thanks for your answer, but the article you gave me a link to - from what I understand - doesn't imply that AMD is much better for gaming. It seems like that article doesn't focus on gaming and 3D graphics performance, at least not enough. I've read some of the other articles that one refers to and they don't focus on GPUs either.

It's weird that when they speak of gaming a bit, Intel wins in their tests. I always thought GPU is more important for games.

Overall it depends on the AMD APU or Intel CPU that comes with the laptop. From a graphics core perspective, there are some AMD graphic cores that are less powerful than Intel graphic cores. For example, laptops with the AMD A8-6410 APU are fairly inexpensive and it has the Radeon R5 (Beema) graphics core. Laptops with the Haswell generation Core i3-4005u CPU are also fairly inexpensive and it comes with the Intel HD 4400 graphics core. The Radeon R5 (Beema) graphics core can definitely play Blu-Ray movies, but it is also less powerful than the Intel HD 4400 graphics core.

As for games, when choosing a laptop with a strong CPU, but weaker GPU and another laptop with a weaker CPU, but a stronger GPU, the laptop with the less powerful CPU and stronger GPU will do better in games. That is because most games are limited by the GPU. Between a laptop with the A8-6410 and another laptop with the Core i3-4005u, the laptop with the Core i3-4005u will perform better in games because the Intel HD 4400 is more powerful than the Radeon R5 (Beema) graphics core. Additionally, despite the fact that the A8-6410 is a quad core APU and the Core i3-4005u is only a dual core CPU, the Core i3 CPU is at least as a power as the the A8-6410 APU.
