asus eee pc 4g white o/s probs and drivers issues

ok i have been given an asus eee-pc 4g in white but it has no o/s and a tiny ssd hddi was wondering what o/s should i put on it also drivers could be an issue too perhaps someone here could help me to sort this out because even though its just a notebook/netbook my daughter loves it because its "cute" so i really need to get it running if poss

ok thanks for the eeebuntu link but could you expand on the xp based software i ask because im alot more comfortable with xp then linux i just dont know what version of xp to install i have a few copies xp student/ and xp professional but i worry as it has a small hdd (4gb)

according to the guy i got it from it used to run windows before he formatted it but he couldn tell me what windows it ran before

still haven't sorted this out as cant get o/s to install from usb

I remember in the bios you have to enable usb legacy or compatibility support for the external usb devices to boot.
