Hello everyone,

As you understand I have the ASUS Strix 7.1 Gaming Headset, link to product:
https://www.asus.com/Headphones-Headsets/STRIX_71/

The headset turns on and works fine on notebooks, but not on desktops.
I have a very strange thing happening once its connected to a desktop:

1. The headphones turn on for a second and then go off again.
2. The audio station itself, doesn't react at all.
3. Windows gives the generic "One of the USB devices attached to your computer has malfunctioned ..."

So far I've tried updating the firmware and some other update from ASUS, nothing helps.
Also have switched many different USB ports, no change.

My specs:
MB: ASUS Z170-K
CPU: i5-6600

Any idea will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Solution

Heheheh I know the feeling :)

SOLVED!
Bought a cheap PCI expansion card with USB 2.0, worked like a charm.
Looks like I was right, some sort of stupid USB-Compatibility issue.

PS
I cant pick my own answer as a solution?

Intel drivers updated
ASMedia updated
Black USB ports tried
BIOS is the newest one

Still nothing.

4 different desktops, same result, both old and new systems.
Works flawlessly on notebooks

All of the operating systems were windows 7 64bit
What Asus drivers? there are none, this headset is plug and play.

As soon as I do that, the "One of the USB devices attached to your computer has malfunctioned ..." bubble appears and the thing won't even light up.

The one thing that I can find in common with the notebooks that it works well with is that they are pretty old.

Indeed still working on the laptops.

About boot!
When I first plugged in the headset and turned the computer on, it POSTed but then got stuck on the "ASUS" screen.
I restarted the computer and got a weird error that "OC failed, go to BIOS etc." - I never OCed, computer is bone stock and brand new.

Don't have another cable to check with sadly

UPDATE

I got it working on some desktops, but only old ones.
Tested like 10 computers so far, if the computer is old, everything works well, if its newer - malfunction, regardless if its a notebook or a desktop.

Starting to suspect some sort of weird USB compatibility issue. The next step is to install an old USB 1.1 PCI controller on a new computer and to see what happens.

Just did that a few minutes ago, same results, so its not the cable.
Its pretty hard to get a PCI USB 1.1 (just because I'm assuming that PCIE 1.1 doesn't exist), so I'm gonna try with PCIE 2.0 first and hope for the best.
