My daughter's 13.3" Zenbook was having issues and quickly degraded to where we couldn't even load Windows. Tried the obvious stuff to refresh it etc and ended up calling Asus. They had us send it in and they said the hard drive is bad and wanted $510 to fix it. We decided it's not worth that much so they are sending it back to us. My question is, if I put a new drive in it myself, what are my options for getting a new OS installed since it didn't come with any disks? I do have Windows 8 upgrade disks that I bought for a computer that has been decommissioned. Would those work for a new install, or would I be stuck buying a new Windows OS? Thanks for your help!

Hi,

If you're going to use a different HDD or SSD with your laptop, you need to also buy a new OS for it. You can also just order an OEM Windows OS from Lenovo that would come with all the software pre-installed in your laptop when you bought it.

Why contact Lenovo for a Asus laptop?

Try the Win 8 disk and see how it goes....alternative is that Asus knows about the HD so contact them on the OS - there should be no need to buy a new copy - the license isn't tied to the HD
