For anyone wondering, yes the cell phone providers can legally change the terms of your contract at any time. However thankfully the gov't mandated that if they want this flexibility then it goes both ways, and if they change your contract then they have effectively BROKEN it, and therefore you are RELEASED from it. The moment ATT touches your contract you are free to cancel and leave them if you like. Someone mentioned earlier that ATT is simply gambling on the chance that people are ignorant of this fact and therefore will keep service. The amount of people who cancel vs the amount of people who upgrade their plans is still a net profit increase for ATT, so they're willing to do it.

[citation][nom]jblack[/nom]And just how do they know someone is tethering? By usage? ---- I think we just all need to move to Verizon.[/citation]

If that becomes the only choice... I'm surely not going to pay $45 a month just to know I can tether/hot spot if I need to. I have never used mywi, but it's installed on my phone in case I need to use it... I already pay plenty per month.

Samuel : I use 'User Agent Faker' to avoid getting mobile sites whenever I surf. Am I going to get a letter in the mail because it looks like I'm using Firefox ?

What's funny is AT&T was making a profit with my $30 /month unlimited. I say this because that was the subsidized price under a two year contract (I would have be paying $20/month for data with a phone other than iPhone). Now I see it as they are really trying to milk an obnoxious profit from the proverbial teat.

Well well well, another ATT kick in the nuts. First the put caps on everything and then they want to double dip on charging for THE SAME service...just like texting...it's all data and it should not matter how you use it, through your phone's browser or computer's browser ITS ALL THE SAME DATA.
I'm sure this is just their way of getting rid of those people that still had the unlimited usage plan on their phones.

When they send you this notice(if they do) call them and tell them you are like to listen to pandora, watch videos and you don't see a single thing wrong with using the service that you pay for! It's not like they are going to lose money on you, they just want to squeeze the maximum possible amount. A-HOLES!

They charge for tethering too!!!!

If you could, would you steal gas from the gas station because at $4/gal

If you pay $45 for 4gb of data, and want to use it on your laptop or in your phone it should be treated the same, its the same 4gb. If you buy gasoline then take it home and put it in your lawnmower do you want to pay exon an addition $4 / gallon because its now in your lawnmower?

The more I read about these practices, the more I am convinced they do have already the infrastructure to support all the user needs, and just don't, in agreement between providers, maybe the other providers secretly paying ATT to be "the bad guy" so their own services look good, as in "look at the competition, don't mind if some little thing goes wrong here, or if we don't innovate as fast as technology advances allow us", because they can milk the user more efficiently this way.

Imagine holding people to the contract they agreed to and signed. What a bunch of losers (the people expecting to get free service they agreed not to use).

[citation][nom]tsnorquist[/nom]Whatever happened to "customer service"?Wish I could travel back in time to the 50's.[/citation]

There was a link here I think, posted on this thread after my comment of yesterday. Can't find it anymore. Not sure I remember it right.
I hope the poster got not banned by mistake for what might be mistaken for spam, or, got "taken away" because he said too much.
Here is the link again:

On Usage-Based Billing, or, the deception on it.
On the worst case scenario it's entertaining propaganda against these practices. But I found it quite right also, not just entertaining to watch.

Hahaha, thumbs up!!

There are ways other than data usage to tell if you're tethering or not. It's called a MAC address, every machine has one and it's different. If you're tethering the request will come from the MAC address associated with the laptop, if it's from the phone it will come from the phone. There are stipulations written into the contracts to prevent tethering. Needless to say it's the morons who feel the need to run stuff like bittorrent through tethering that are causing the issue, not the person who is using it for everyday standard usage.
