Audio Streaming Software

I have a dedicated server that I can run several virtual machines on. I was thinking about creating a server that streams my families favorite music since we have a decent collection.

I'm new to this aspect since I usually just listen to Pandora. Since the price went up, we decided to just invest in the music instead so I don't know what is out there.

I can run it on Ubuntu or Windows, doesn't matter to me. I just want something that works well.

What is a good free software that will allow me to stream my families music to devices such as a smartphone or to a computer?

I do use Plex at home and I'm not fond of it's music streaming.
