By the way, you are using Windows XP, aren't you? Also, to further clarify the situation, could you take a good look at Device Manager? http/www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/snap_dev_mgr.mspx?mfr=true I wonder if you can spot a little yellow triangle with exclamation mark, which seems to be related to your audio device.
