I am looking for a very high end set of headphones. I prefer over ear sets and it will be used for music, movies, and gaming. I want the best quality possible when listening to music but I also need very good directional sound for when I play games. I have a budget of ~350 USD for the headset but I can go up to around 400 USD.

Sound card: Integrated IDT 92HD73E
Motherboard: MSI MS-7778 (Jasmine)

If It would help to upgrade my sound card I have no problem doing that.

The most important features will be

- High quality sound
- good directional audio
- comfort (these will be worn for long periods of time)
- noticeable upgrade from my current set

I use a desk mic so I do not need a built in one.

Solution
Found the first real deal for closed back headphones.

i have not used these, but being amazon easy returns and you can get them for $208 from amazon warehouse. Plus the guy in the post states you should buy the Extra Large Ear buds, not sure the cost.

I'm not sure if these need a amp but i'll check, If your think do you need a DAC, they just help the Digital to analog convert to your ears, means , Its better then most basic computer converting you get on cheap computers. Shoudl be able to get a DAC for $99 from Schiit.

Hope...

On my first post - one of the suggested headphone were V-Moda Crossfade LP but It's actually LP2, I was going to mention the M-100 but I know it's considerably more expensive than the LP2, but with the deal you'll be getting -then I'd say yes. If your main use is gaming like 70% and 30% musical then closed back is best, with that you can also take it on a bus or crowded places (outside) and not bother anyone on what you're listening. However if you live alone and don't care about noise then get an open back cans.

I have open back and close back myself to use. Both are low impedance so I can just plug it in with my tablets and mobile phones. I also use either one on my Playstation 3 through my DAC. I use open back when driving and closed back when taking the bus. Most of the time, I use my close back headphone because I don't want to disturb anyone. So depend on how you use it, I'd say the M-100 is of the right headphone for your needs. and depends on who is reviewing it, it could be the worst or the best because they're preference isn't the same as yours or mine.

If you have different ways of usage then figure out the majority of your headphone usage and decide from there. If you are leaning towards open back headphones then, low impedance like the HD 558 or momentum, or like the AGK or Beyerdynamic DT 770; though I heard the high Impedance DT880 is also good, but then that fall to HD-600 category.

PS. I use my open air headphone when listening to music alone but when I get home, I use my loudspeakers before my wife gets home. However I bring my closed back to work. Just to give you an idea on how I use my headphones.

I know it's not easy to decide when you can't soundstage them. Good luck on your decision.

o cool. i'll still look for deals about. I guess you like the V-moda because of having the mic on the phones, so its easy to upgrade?

No I read a bunch of reviews and I like the overall asthetic. Ill either go with that microphone you linked me earlier in the thread or the addon mic for the headset. Think ill need a DAC?
