I bought new a HP Pavilion dv4-5110us laptop in August 20012. The back light has gone out three times since. Each time it was repaired under an extended warranty that is now expired. Should I repair or replace?

Is it the actual backlight itself or the inverter? I assume by your statement that it is out that it is in fact completely out (i.e. you can't see anything really on the screen except for shadows), but before it died did it flicker? I ask because three failures in such a short time period seems uncommon, but not unheard of.

I am wondering if you actually have a marginal/failing inverter.

Regardless, that laptop still has some life in it- it has a decent processor and the repair you are looking to do is fairly easily done, and maybe more importantly for you, cheaply done. My source for that display is showing it would run all of $50 and, should you decide you want to do an inverter as well (since I assume you don't have the test...

My source for that display is showing it would run all of $50 and, should you decide you want to do an inverter as well (since I assume you don't have the test equipment), an inverter board for that laptop will run all of $5-10. Definitely worth repairing.
