Backlight intensity

On my old 3630, I had a light cell which would tune the backlight according
to the external brigthness.
It does not seem possible on my new 4150. Any solution?

Go back to the 3630.
Manually change the backlight.

If there isn't a cell to detect the light then you can't expect the machine
to work as if it has one. Surely if you know this is an important feature to
you it
is the kind of thing to ask *before* you buy, not after?

Dont't know. You also expect the iPaq would go better over the years, not
backwards...

OK. One ambient light sensor on your left hand. One smaller size,
bigger storage, wireless possibilities and a storage card slot on your
right hand. Which one is better. 😉

I for one would love to trade in the ambient light sensor in my 3870
for the 4150 form factor. I think HP decided there were more people
like me. :)

What you got is not of the same family as the 36xx, 37xx, 38xx, 39xx, 54xx,
and 55xx iPAQs... it is this family of iPAQs that have the photo cell. It
looks like the 5550 would have been the better choice.

I am not sure (this usualy mean I am sure of the contrary), removing a 1
cubic millimiter light sensor from a 80000 cubic millimeters device makes
any difference in terms of space gain. But it certainly does to me in terms
of functionnality.

It's not just space. It's also cost. Everything that is added is
something that has to be paid for. So I can understand why
design decisions like this are made. But then again, I never
used the ambient sensor anyhow. :)

The cost of a light cell? It's so ridiculous that even Compaq put one in
their old iPaqs...

It is still in the new iPAQ... the one with the same form factor as the
original 3xxx iPAQs...The ones that use the expansion sleeves...

The 4xxx series are a totally different breed... in no way are they actually
on the same level as the current h5550 iPAQs.

And the driver implementation. And the support. Don't you think
if this could be done for nothing as you seem to think, every
other Pocket PC would come with one? Everything added to a
standard setup costs money, even if it's little money. Multiply
that amount of little money to the items sold, and you might see
some reason.

This does not explain why some iPaq have it and some others don't. Your
hypothesis is that it would add to the cost of some iPaq and not to others.
I must say I don't follow your logic.

Ok. I'll bite one more time, but this is my last post on this issue.
Look at the price of the 5500 series (which comes with the sensor).
Look at the price of the 4100 or 2200 series (which don't come with
the sensor). See any difference? They're for different markets, and
different forces are at play when HP has to make design decisions.
