One last question if you folks don't mind:

my replacement arrived today, and even though it says on the box that it's a
replacement for the 02k6897 (which had a design capacity of 43 wh according
to the battery health utility), this replacement, with the same published
specs, says it has a design capacity of only 38 wh.

Since the design capacity wasn't one of the published specs, I doubt I can
complain that I didn't receive what I ordered, but I'm wondering if this
sounds normal (it's still rated at 4000 mah just like the original).

It says that it has a design capacity of 38.96 wh and is charged fully at
38.95 wh.

This is about 10% less than the original battery that came with the A31, and
indeed, I have read that the batteries shipped in the A30 series had the
same form factor but did have 10% less capacity. The battery health utility
lists the model number only as "IBM compatible".

I wish I could look at the ebay auction again, but the jerks at ebay took it
down. I would call the place again and ask whats up. You allready have the
product, so it's not like they can take your money and run no matter how mad
you make them. It might just be a mix up.

Thanks.

I did email them, and they did say that the batteries were spec'ed at 43 wh,
so I can return it.

Unfortunately, they have no way of testing them, so they could have a whole
shipment that aren't up to spec and I'm their testing facility. 🙁 I'd
suspect someone sold them the A30 3600 mah batteries claiming them as the
4000 mah version used in the A31, but it's going to take me several returns
before I can convince them of that.

Not to worry, it's only $80; even if I loose it all I'll survive. I don't
have much experience with EBay, so it's probably as good a resource as you
suggest, I just happened to get a company cutting QA a little to much. If
anyone else wants a buyer beware, they do business as Eagle Imports or Power
Gears.

Part of my problem also is that design capacity for batteries doesn't seem
to be a commonly given spec, and it is not stamped on the battery casing
itself, so without a thinkpad to test with, the company can't even tell if
what's in the box is really what it says it is.

Is there an ah or mAH marking somewhere on the battery casing? Something
like 4.0 or 4000?

Yes, the casing is marked 4000 mah, which is the same spec as the original
ibm 02k6897 battery, but it ends up with about 10% less capacity (according
to the ibm battery utility) than the original. Either the info in the rom
of the battery is wrong, or, something else is.

I think the store is getting ripped off by the people he buys his product
from. If you can get him to let you open one up (or get him to open one up),
I bet he'll find a bunch of 3600mah cells.

That's exactly what I think too; but, I seem to be dealing with the
warehouse operation only (he said he had no test equipment), so we'll have
to ship a couple of batteries back and forth before I attempt to ask for my
money back.
