battery replacement

First time for me replacing my Thinkpad battery. I would like
recommendations as to
where I can get a good price, and also, what in particular should I look for
in the specs? I found that most are rated at 4000 MA but I did find a few
rated at 3600 MA, so I assume a higher MA rating means a higher capacity and
is therefore desirable? Otherwise, I didn't see anything to distinguish
between them.

(this is for an A31).

thanks.

More MA (actually it should be MaH - or is it maH) is better. In my opinion,
the best prices are on ebay.

I'm looking for a new battery only, not used or reconditioned; do you still
think ebay?

around $105 plus shipping from one place, and $94 plus shipping from another
(the second is something like Avont, can't quite remember their name, but
when I tried to order, their web shopping cart failed).

If you paid the paypal account using your credit card, call the credit
card company and dispute the charge, explaining to them what happened.
It's possible that paypal will refund the money, but not likely.

If you look around, you might be able to get a genuine IBM
replacement battery. I've never used aftermarket batteries
so I can't speak for their quality but I have had IBM
replace genuine batteries even after they were past
warrantee.

The original batteries for the A31s were made by Sanyo or
Panasonic. Part numbers:
02K6887, 02K6898, 02K7021 & 02K7022 are all 10.8V 4.0AH
batteries.

The batteries for the A30s were only 3.6AH.

It's funny that IBM doesn't list a replacement/extra battery
for the A31s on their accessories web site. The price for
the A30 batteries is $159 USD on their site.

Here's a site with a spec sheet on battery life form recent
IBM TPs. It lists original battery part number by model. The
A31s are in the middle of the 71 page .PDF.

Wow, from the seller with the link I posted? That is really strange. Really,
really strange. The last guy who said paypal isn't likely to refund you is
wrong IMHO. I'd bet dollars to donuts paypal will refund you.

Well, that may be. But I've been dealing with paypal for about 3
months now on a similar situation, (won the auction for a laptop and
the seller closed his account and left after he got the paypal
payment). Here's a copy of their latest correspondance with me.....

Yes. Look for a reputable seller dealing in new 3rd party replacement
batteries. Make sure that the seller has a large turnaround of stock so
that he is not likely to be selling the odd very old battery and has a good
feedback profile.

I bought a spare battery for my HP/Compaq nx9005 back in February from such
a seller in the UK (battery_pro). It turned out to be a PowerSmartEnergy
product and has maintained a very good capacity since then. At about the
same time HP replaced my original OEM battery under warranty because its
capacity was failing. This replacement also seems to be losing capacity,
although its not yet out of spec (I have been using both batteries in
rotation so the comparison is fair). Also the battery capacity monitor
button in the genuine HP product is not correctly fitted and requires a huge
amount of force to activate. Hence the quality of a 3rd party product
bought from eBay at about half the HP price appears to be much better than
either of my HP originals.

Yah, I tend to think that either they will, or EBay will prevent the
transaction from being completed (since their email said something like "all
results of this transaction are null and void").

thanks to all for the suggestions.

btw,

I did call the company behind the link you posted (doing business as either
"Power Gears Inc." or "Eagle Imports Inc" and their answer was a little
strange; from "it eventually will be straightened out", to (when I insisted
I had a receipt that payment was made) "it has already shipped".

Well, I haven't called the CC company yet, but my email to both EBay and
PayPal have both gone unanswered for 24 hours now, so much for how "safe"
EBay is for shopping.

On the up side the company promises they've shipped the item out anyway, and
that it's all just a mis-understanding with EBay, so we'll see.

thanks.

Maybe I should try that, but my A31 went out of warrantee just a few months
ago, and I tried to get IBM to replace an accessory component which has
broken again after it broke 3 times under warrantee, and they said
absolutely never do they do anything like that. Once the warrantee period
is up, I was told no exceptions.

I might consider an original IBM battery, but this one only lasted 18
months, so I can't say I'm exactly impressed with IBM (Panasonic) battery
quality.

So far, no response to my email (and I couldn't find a phone number anywhere
to call for them).

Here are my thoughts. That company was saying something in their ads that
Ebay didn't like. Either they used somebody else's pics, committed a
trademark violation, something. That's why they say it will eventually be
sorted out. That had tons of ebay feedback and it was good. I don't think
your money was gone, but I would check (either with the credit card company
if you used credit card, the bank if you used a bank account, and paypal if
yo straight up used paypal.

Did you let paypal know you did make the purchase on an auction site,
specificall Ebay, the company that owns them?

Yes to both. I "won" the auction (makes me wish I hadn't) for an
A31p. You may be still able to view the results on ebay.... try doing
a search on item # 3474573172 (the item in dispute).

(It's doubly obnoxious because this seller STILL carries a 100?%
positive feedback rating, because the system won't accept any feedback
from me, since he is no longer an ebay user.)

The complaint procedure is very structured. You first have to prove to
them that you've tried to settle with the seller (which is hard to do
when he is on the other side of the country and has closed his account
on ebay and disconnected the telephone). Once ebay is convinced (or
at least answers your mail), you then approach paypal. Once you
convince then you have been screwed, they attempt to collect from the
seller. Of course, by then he is nowhere to be found, so they tell you
basically you're screwed (but you already knew that). (Read the
message they sent to me again. )

Then you tell all this to your credit card company, and if you have a
good one, they work with you to try to recover your money. It's been 3
1/2 months now since the seller took my money from paypal, and I still
don't know if I'll recover any of it.

So once again, if it were me in the position of the OP, I'd at least
contact the credit card company's customer service to get a file
started. That way, if the seller does send the battery eventually,
there's no harm done. But if he doesn't within a reasonable time (I
think my credit card company allows them a month after the original
promised ship date), they can begin to take action.

I really think they have much more "clout" than any individual, so
it's just a good idea to get them working on it.

That's about the normal lifespan of a LiION battery!
