I will say only benefit might be using pop3. So you can see your mail offline. But i don't prefer that way. Because rarely i get offline. I never had a time that i could not find my email due to internet disconnection. I always keep a copy when some thing important arrives in mail. Even if internet goes i have additional ways of obtaining internet. So i don't want to keep all the junk in my local pc.

Some people might think keeping mail local gives more privacy. But i doubt that.
