Best 7.1 Gaming headset

Hey guys

I just bought this new sound card which is a Creative PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card. It supports 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 surround sound. I am a bit of a passionate gamer and like to have the best possible experience as I can (best graphics, best sound, best game play and entertainment). I'm not a big fan of speakers, but I do like headsets and I would love to buy a very nice one with great sound for gaming, music, movies, sound editing etc. What will allow me to hear from the footsteps of an enemy approaching from a fair distance away, to hear my friend texting on her phone on the other end of skype, the aliens in a galaxy far far away (lol). I know 7.1 in a headset is still unmatched to the real setup of speakers, but I think it would still be a much better experience than the average gaming headset. I need it to have a mic and feel acceptably comfortable. Price isn't really an issue but nothing more than $250 please. Will look into all reccomendations Thanks!

Its a preferences, true 7.1 is disorientating for some people with a headset.

That headset is NOT TRUE 7.1, that is why its cheaper, its a 2.1 with technology that emulates full surround.
Nothing wrong with that, like I said, its a preference.

And yes, it can utilize the sound card, but it is preferred to connect directly to the sound card itself.

The Razer Tiamat costs a lot but is very it is VERY good! Among the best.

That is another awesome headset and will utilize your sound card. Your probably right about the g930, since its wireless it probably wont utilize the sound card. But i could be wrong.

Yeah I would prefer real 7.1 Surround. The Razer Tiamat is the first headset to have this. I'm not sure how new this headset is and I was wondering if there have been any others since that headset that might be better. I would prefer to have the best I can get with my $250 limit, so if it's going to cost me $249, so be it, as long as it will last more than 1 year and is comfortable and will utilize my sound card properly.

Asus looks very nice too, I'd say the mic is better than the Razer one but the sound is only virtual 7.1 not real 7.1. Still a decent headset though if you want USB.

A little late to the discussion and I'm sure you've already gotten a headset. But I found this post by searching for a good 7.1 headset, so I'll try to help any future readers of this thread. I have the Logitech G930 and I would not recommend it. I bought it because I hate having cords running everywhere so the wireless sounded great. However, it can only connect wirelessly, even though you can plug in its micro-USB charger, it still transmits through the wireless USB dongle. Well, I would never recommend a wireless headset again. This thing loses connection about once every 5 min. Sometimes it reconnects itself after 10-15 sec, sometimes I have to reconnect manually. So I end up having to turn on subtitles in every game because you never know when it will cut out. One last thing, the battery only last about 3-4 hours tops even though when fully charged it says it has 8 hours left, so I end up having to have it charger plugged in half the time which brings me back to having a corded headset. Oh and even if you turn it off when done, it still drains the battery, don't ask me why. So the thing stays plugged in 90% of the time and I'm sure the battery will continue to worse from all the overcharging.

Anyway, enough ranting. I have this cheap Biostar Hi-Fi A85W motherboard, but its supposed to have some awesome sound capabilities. It has 6 audio output in the rear and supposed to be a S/PDIF-OUT for the front panel. I don't know if I bought the wrong case or not, but all I have up front are usb ports and standard headphone/mic outputs even though the case cables say S/PDIF on them which is connected to the S/PDIF connector on the MB. I'm just not sure how to actually use the digital audio from the front. My question is, what (corded) headset should I use to get 7.1? Will the 7.1 come through the small headphone jack up front, or do I need to use the 6 outputs in the back? I'm looking at this one at Monoprice:

It seems to have a connector for all situations, but its not a true 7.1 headset. The Tiamat's specs sound awesome, just the price seems steep like all Razor products.

pslayton - if you're sure the audio jacks on your front panel are standard 3.5mm and not optical, it's likely analog stereo, which wouldn't be able to handle 7.1 through a single line. If you wanted to use true 7.1, you would use the jacks in the back, assuming you're using your mobo's dac.

the Tiamat 7.1 actually has 5 x 3.5mm analog lines that you'd connect to the back there, so it wouldn't be something that you could feed into your front panel. and yes the price is a bit too high unfortunately.

if you really want to use your front panel, look for a good stereo headset. it's worth it and will allow you to use the stereo line in the front. that may sound weird when your focus is surround sound, but let me tell you man, good stereo models are not to be overlooked. dollar for dollar they'll outperform gaming headsets, plus they sound great in other settings like cinema, music, etc. It's def worth a look if you want to see what hi-fi has to offer.

audio technica makes the ATH-M50, which is a bit cheaper than the Tiamat and definitively an overall better headset. sennheiser (pc 350/pc 360) and beyerdynamic (dt 770, mmx 300) are both top tier as well.

Just a quick warning from a person who owns the razer tiamat 7.1, dont tug on the cord, ive owned mine for just under 2 years, and the right speaker keeps cutting out unless i wiggle the cord around, this may just be a defect in my headset, but it is very annoying, if you have already purchased this headset and want to have long life out of it, make sure the cables are kept tidy so any tugging cannot occur, i found this out the hardway when my knee got caught with the headphone cord and tugged on the cable, now its messing up on me.

I have the G930 also and yes it has problems,turning the thing on is a chore, so does my G700s mouse. Im starting to not like Logitech but for the price when its working its awesome.
