Best Buy CEO: iPad Halved Some Notebook Sales

I don't see the tablet sector killing notebooks or netbooks. Personally, I can't subsitute a touch screen for a keyboard. The market will support all 3 segements...tablets, notebooks and netbooks.

I would be that there is also something to do with pre-loaded software crap that comes on most retail-sold laptops. Most of which leaves remnants or prompts during the uninstall if there even is an uninstall. At least with the Apple devices it is alot cleaner to get rid of something.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha to all the windoze heads that were sure the iPad would fail....!

We'll continue to wait for the meto products following apple!

I think there are two different markets for Notebooks, use where notebooks are used as content producing computers, and one where notebooks are used for media consumption and social networking. The later is actually better suited for the tablet, and the iPad is perfectly positioned to eat some lunches in this category.

Now we know why Apple wanted to stay out of the low end Notebook market. They knew it was the wrong device, and they had something better in mind. I really wished I worked for a company that had such long term vision, commitment, and sheer guts. They deserve their success.

i didnt think it would fail. anything job releases, his followers will buy right after licking his butthole.

pads and slates just aren't useful for...you know... people that like to get things done. like work.

oh and have fun with the new ipad. 2nd gen will have one camera, 3rd gen will have two cameras and twice the ram. apple should hire me.

Yep pretty much... ZUne followed the iPod touch, Win Phone 7 followed the iPhone and now whatever tablet they come up with will follow the iPad.

I can see some redundant patterns.... But behold all the Apple haters, they will cherish and glorify whatever comes out to compete with the iPad

pbrigido, Correct.

I myself cannot see the point in a netbook or tablet. My phone does the exact same thing. Waste of money as far as I'm concerned.

"The company is currently pulling back its offering of music and movie discs to reflect the general consumer's shift to digital mediums."

The reason they dont sell music is because you can get it $5-8 cheaper at music stores. As for movies, some of us prefer to have phsyical copies of the disks. If they get rid of it they are just kicking themselves in the arse.

Its rather difficult to DL a 1080p movie over an internet connection and theres no extra content... and worse, its the same $20~30 price.

Scaling back their TVs? Funny... didn't think an iPad and Kindle would take up so much FLOOR space.

Will the tablet sector eventually kill notebooks?

Definitely not. I still don't have a reason to buy a tablet. My notebook lets me get all my work done and my phone (which is not even a smartphone) lets me call and text. I've got HD cameras and camcorders for photo/video. I prefer having each device specialized to its function. A tablet just doesn't have the computing power of a notebook and has no economic niche.

Because whatever comes out to compete usually obeys the phrase "bang for your buck," unlike Apple products

I won't get a tablet device for the exact same reason I bought a full size notebook and not a netbook. The screens are too small and since they are trendy, are way overpriced for what you get. I bought an Asus gaming laptop with a 16" screen for under $900. Netbooks for $400? An iPad for $600+? Why spend so much for a device with such limited usefullness? Sure, there are people who don't need the power I have with my notebook. But I couldn't justify buying a device that are just larger, more expensive replacements for ipod/media players.

Tell that to the millions of people that purchased the iPad

Apple products are good products. Personally I'd just rather pay less for windows based products that can do more of what I need them to do.

Right... that is why the slate was pulled back from the market... couse they couldnt compete with the price...

Now the new Android tablet is coming up and the rumor is that pricewise will almost twice the price of the base version of the iPad. But hey you can root it and install a few geeky apps that will let you ssh to another server, and it will let you multi-task with gazillion apps while your battery gets drained in a matter of minutes.

I don't recall anyone saying it would fail. I do recall people saying that mostly just apple fanboys would buy it, and it would prove to be relatively useless for anything but little games and surfing awkwardly, just like a regular smartphone. And that's exactly what it does.

Tablets already existed before the iPad, it's only their marketing that made it popular. Now we will see other companies really innovate and make a tablet a viable option. Just look at Dell's new convertible dual core tablet that converts into a netbook running Windows 7. Now that's useful and innovative.

The iphone is just an ipod touch with cell capabilities. The ipad is just a bigger ipod with zero changes. That's not innovation. Other companies will truly innovate to compete. That's the way it's always been while Apple gets all the "innovation" credit.

The one thing Apple does well is marketing. No one can say otherwise.

I played around with the ipad and it was cool and all but it isn't exactly practical. This is why I bought a netbook instead of an ipad. Although I would have preferred a ION netbook instead but oh well. I got my ipod touch 4G for fun and games while netbook reigns champ when it comes down to getting stuff done.

Tablets are the next big thing. Some netbooks may evolve to be convertible. Apple has proven that people will easily pay $600 and more for a tablet that is as powerful as a 7-10 year old PC. I'm waiting for the competition, since I don't like Apple's closed ecosystem and lack of ports etc etc.

Right... Dell's tablet is super innovative. It is so innovative that it requires you to drag a portable generator with you, just to keep it powered up.
yeah and lets not talk about the weight of the freaking thing... Why even bother buying this and not a real laptop, when you cant even hold it in your hands for more than 10 minutes without getting cramps.

Innovation at its best!
Lololol

Yes the iPad is an iPod touch but bigger, thats where the trick is, in the simplicity of the device. It has a very responsive GUI that allows users to surf the web, check emails and read e-books for 10 + hours with a single charge, and lets not talk about the rest of the 250,000 apps, games, and movies you can watch.....

That's where Apple's innovation is, in the simplicity of the device.
