I just bought this Asus G51vx from Newegg yesterday:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220639

$1099 plus free shipping today when I checked. I haven't recieved mine yet. I wanted Nvidia graphics because ATI graphics never play nice with my blu-ray player software in XP. I wanted i7 but read that a Core 2 Duo above 2.5Ghz will be enough so that it doesn't bottleneck the GTX 260M. GTS 360M has higher clocks and gddr5 so it's a little better than GTX 260M. Any Nvidia cards numerically below, and in the same series, as these cards perform worse. You can always upgrade the cpu later, quad, when their prices drop. That's what I'm gonna do in a year.

Alienware is way overpriced and the OP said he doesn't want Alienware anyway. I got my G51vx and I must say it's nice. I pulled and stored the original hard drive before I ever started the laptop and put in a WD Black Edition 320Gb and installed XP. The laptop flies! I haven't installed any games yet but I ordered a second WD BE 320Gb hard drive to run in raid 0. I can't find the caddy for sale anywhere so I'll have to rig something. Why wouldn't Asus include it makes no sense to me. I'll make an image of the array in case it goes bad. I won't have anything mission critical on here anyway. I thought about an ssd but they're still too expensive to experiment with.

I just ran 3dMark06 on the G51vx and got 10056. That was all stock no oc C2D @ 2.53Ghz and stock 260m timings and 3dmark06 default settings. I'll have to check around and see how the score compares.
