I have a Dell Inspiron 15r 5520. Here are the current specs: Core i7 @2.2 with turbo boost up to 3.2, 1TB 5400 RPM HDD, 8 GB DDR3 1600Mhz (I think), intel hm77 chipset, HD4000 graphics, Win 7 HP 64 Bit. What would be the best upgrade for $50 to boost my gaming performance?

You can't really do anything to improve your gaming performance, especially for $50. The only real upgrade I can see you being able to do is replacing the cd drive (assuming your laptop has one) with a cheap ssd purely for booting windows

I second the no upgrade options for laptops in reference to gaming. Unless you've spent a ridiculous amount of money on a gaming laptop that has an upgradeable graphics module (not sure if anyone even builds such a thing anymore) your SOL.

It won't help you, but they are working on PCI Express External which should allow GPU's to be sold in enclosures connected by a PCI-e external cable. There is also some research being done on using Thunderbolt for this purpose.
