I am trying to find a good start position for three sub woofers in a home theater room that is 25' W x 12' H x 50' L. Someone told me to use an oscilloscope to find the locations. Any one know how to do this?

Regards,
Mike

Subwoofer location is not too critical as the ear can't detect location of low frequency sounds. But it does matter in some cases where placement will change how much bass the thing generates. For example, corner placement with carpet will sound different than moving it a foot from the wall on wood floor, and so on.

Move it around a bit and see how things sound.

Placing something like speakers based on just some electrical measurements is like rating a dinner by counting how many peas you get and the weight of the steak.

To build off hang's statement, it does matter to an extent whether the subs are down firing or rear firing. If down firing, a floor would work much much better than carpet, but rear firing doesn't matter as much.

Hey hang-the-9,

I like your approach. Should I start mid wall on three sides and go from there? Should I move all three subs at same time?

Cheers,
Mike

Oh, I just read that it's 3 not one. You may just try one at each end and one middle. Or just use two. It seems the setups you read about are two or four subs.

Take a look at this, http://www.sonicdesign.se/subplace.html there is a item there about multiple subs.

http://stereos.about.com/od/optimizingperformance/a/multiplesubs.htm

although it only deals with one sub, pretty nice and simple guide on speaker placement. http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/setup/connection-guide/home-theater-speaker-guide/index.html

.....I just read your link that you sent that gentlemen on Subwoofer location and it blew me away when i read the best place for a subwoofer is next to a wall & better in a corner...How does that guy get away with such bull... Iv read many articles on how to build a proper home theater & just about everyone has said to keep your sub away from walls or corner because of vibration and the walls absorbs a good part of your sound and it decreases the quality..I have a 1000 watt sub & the pamphlet even said not to locate the sub next to a wall so does this guy know somthing that no one else knows...
