Hello Audio people!

I would like to start off by saying im an audio rookie, so I got a few questions to ask.

Recently I bought the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro Headphones 250 Ohm to use with my ps4 for gaming and for my pc for music.

Will I need a amp/dac/sound card, to use with my ps4? I realize that 250 ohm, must require something extra, as it quite a lot to handle for the ps4 alone. I mainly want to ram up the sound and improve audio quality. I'll mostly be playing fps gamers like call of duty and battlefield.

I'd like you to link me to different amps/dacs/sounds cards. However at this point, I'm not sure what these are, so if you would please explain what the different things are meant for it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance! If I left something out, please do ask.

Hello and welcome to the world of audio! Firstly, I am in a very similar position to you. I have the Bayerdynamic DT 990 Premium 600 ohm. And a PS4 and a high end PC. I personally have not needed an amp for either my PC or my PS4. U just plug it straight in via 3.5mm and enjoy. I hope this helps and good luck! If you want to know more about sound cards, DACs and amps, please feel free to private message me on the forum. I go on every day so will pick up your message quickly. Hope this helps and have fun with those headphones!

Thanks for the reply mate! Do you play fps on the ps4, if so, do the theysound alright and can you ram the sound up, so you can hear every detail?

I actually have a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD USB soundcard, which I tried to hook up with my ps4. It actually had a lower max volume than when I plugged the cord directly into the ps4 controller, is this normal? Not sure if I used it correctly as I could not control the volume from the soundcard, only from the sound menu on the ps4.

how did you hook up the x-fi HD? Make sure to use optical out, and have an outlet to USB. I have the same card, and personally, the amp isn't the most resolving, but the DAC should help with the sound quality.

Though connecting the PS4 through your PC works. you need to turn both on.

What is your budget?

Arcam irDAC - http://www.arcam.co.uk/products,rSeries,USB-DACs,irDAC.htm

Parasound Zdac v.2 - https://www.parasound.com/ParasoundZ/zdac.php

If you want something cheap.

FiiO d03k - http://translate.google.ca/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=http://www.fiio.net/&prev=search

Then add a headphone amp like the FiiO E6 or some more expensive, choice is yours.

I am looking now for a Beyerdynamic DT990 600 ohm version. Can my PC push it enough with the motherboard? I have a MSI Z97 GD65. According to the website it says it can do up to 600 ohm's. Do I need a amp or can it push the headphones enough without one?

There's a difference between hearing the sound and listening to the music. 300 ohms is demanding enough, much more on 600.As your on-board sound chip may be good enough to play your 600 ohms cans, I recommend an amp if you decide to get the 600 Ohms but that's all up to your preference if you think you don't need one.
