BIOS not detecting hard drive

In my HP laptop I am getting the error 'Hard disk error 1 (3F0)' or sometimes 'boot device not found' or 'SMART hard disk error'. In system diagnostics, hard drive check it shows 'not installed'. Once in 10 times my laptop boots fine. I have also reinstalled the hard disk, but the problem persists. Weird thing is, Ubuntu live detects hard disk, and I am able to read and write data into my hard disk using Ubuntu bootable pen drive. I am not understanding the problem.

You're very lucky youhave Linux because it will be a useful disk in that Ubuntu system for a while and you can back your files up from there.

It's unlikely to work in Windows if S.M.A.R.T. condemned it and Windows can't even "see" it, you can't run Checkdisk. Buy a USB caddy to slave it to the laptop once you've bought a new disk - SSDs are quite cheap now - and downloaded a Windows ISO from the Microsoft site.

Unfortunately, most probably, the HDD is failing. This is why, you should really back up the data stored on the drive.
Once you do that and when the laptop boots up just fine, you can check it's health status: http/www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Well, different OSes handle failing drives in a different way. This is most probably why, the drive works just fine under Ubuntu.
