Book recommendation please?

Anyone able to recommend a good book on photographic technique for
digital cameras? This is for someone with a Canon A75 camera who's an
inexperienced photographer but a proficient PC/software user. So the
preferred emphasis would be on how to get the best shot with a
_digital_ camera in the first place rather than an ABC of using image
handling software, printing etc.

Books on photography are too numerous to mention. You don't need a book
just aimed at digital photography, what I learned years ago with film
cameras still holds true with much of digital photography. Just go to
your local library and start working your way through the photography
books. It's a good way to find the books that you may want to buy later
to add to your personal library.

Some of the things I would recommend learning are, first the zone
system, how shutter speeds and lens openings interact, and where to
focus for the subject you are shooting.

You are on the right track to learn the mechanics of photography instead
of going out and and taking hundreds of half-assed shots then relying on
a photo editor to bail you out.

In direct response to your question, Thom Hogan has some great books on
Nikon digital photography.
http://www.bythom.com/

Also there are numerous website that you can spend an inordinate amount
of time reading and learning without buying a book. Here are just two:

Hope this helps,

John Dann:

I just bought two [2] photography books for Christmas from
http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/. Better prices than amazon.ca.

I used http://www.amazon.com/ [US] as a reference for more details,
reader reviews and some books have a "Search inside this book'
feature.

With my short list in hand I drove to a Chapters retail store and
discovered a few other fine titles I would have missed. I ordered my
picks online because those prices are cheaper. _DuH?_

Note: What I found is that a fair number of digital photography books
on the retail shelves include irrellevant sections about scanning,
printing, how to share, manage collections and overly detailed
explanations of how to use photoshot. How to buy a digitial camera,
how they work and all that other useless fill can easily be found
online for free and will always be up to date.

Outstanding books like Real World Scanning and Halftones by Blatner,
Fleishman & Roth or the scores of how to use Photoshop books are
readily available if one needs more.

My choices that stood out from the rest were:

1. The Joy of Digital Photography
Author: Jeff Wignall
Format: Hardcover · Published: October 2004
Dimensions: 11.3 x 8.9 x 1.0 in - 304 pages
ISBN: 1579905781 · Published by Lark

::

2. Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in
Photography
Author: Bryan Peterson
Format: Trade Paperback · Published: October 2003
Dimensions: 10.9 x 8.3 x 0.4 in - 160 pages
ISBN: 0817441816 · Published by Watson-Guptill Publications
.... has an amazon.com "search inside"

The following title came in a very close second:

How to Take Great Photographs by John Hedgecoe
Format: Hardcover · Published: September 2001
Dimensions: 11.3 x 8.9 x 0.7 in - 160 pages
ISBN: 1855859130 · Published by Sterling

---

Two [2] other books that remain on my chapters.ca wish list but I can
not afford to purchase at this time were:

Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or
Digital Camera
Author: another well designed book by Bryan Peterson
Format: Trade Paperback · Published: August 2004
Dimensions: 160 Pages, 9 x 11 in
ISBN: 0817463003 · Published by Watson-Guptill Publications

::

How to Do Everything with Digital Photography
Author: Dave Huss
Format: Trade Paperback · Published: March 2004
Dimensions: 9.2 x 7.4 x 0.6 in - 376 pages
ISBN: 0072254351 · Published by McGraw-Hill/Osborne
.... has an amazon.com "search inside"

It covers lots of ground that would be suitable for beginners and it
has enough sections and tips to keep the more experienced digital
photographers happy. I really wan't to order this book along with the
rest but I had to make the cut.

I have Corel Photo-Paint9 - Official Guide by Dave Huss that was an
outstanding reference book in it's day. I do like his work. Check his
other titles. All good stuff.

Thank you for your efforts. It's a good thing that we are reminded (too
infrequently) that the benign who and what of newsgroups is still
available behind all the nonsense.

Thanks again.
