Bought a Sprint LG STYLO 2 from a letgo person. It's locked

So I bought a LG STYLO 2 Sprint phone from a stranger for 100$. Call me naive but I trusted him to call Sprint and close his account. Anyhoo I called Sprint and was lucky enough to get a good tech who told me that all I had to do was take the phone to a sprint or boost store and tell them my story and that they would unlock it and I could keep my Verizon account and transfer my current number to the one I just bought. After reading these posts I am terrified at the thought of going there and what if the phone isn't even paid for and they want to keep it???? Naive girl

They won't take it away. but they will not unlock it until it is payoff.
Unless it was stolen, then I'm not sure.
