Stuff like this is not new - the modern media just makes it easier to widely disseminate such stories, and makes them seem to be more frequent or horrible. It is certainly tragic, but humans are still violent and often irrational critters - remember Lizzie Borden?

Mother's got some stones, though; giving the keyboard back, then waiting for the kid to fall asleep before calling for help takes some moxie...

Wish the US was like Russia in penalty respects. A lot of younger kids I would say 14 or so that can get away with murder by not being able to be tried as an adult.

you have to think, the parents shouldve seen this kind of incident coming. nobody would do this out of the blue. there had to have been signs. not saying the dad deserved it, i dont know the mans history, but if he was even half aware of his son, he wouldve known the kid was going to do something

I think it's all the same. We're animals too, after all. Whether an animal kills another over food or for revenge for killing one of it's own kind... makes no difference.

THAT SAID.......

I don't think it's the games fault, or the parents. Some kids are just mentally ill to begin with. Good parenting doesn't undo a chemical imbalance.

I blame Red Faction: Guerrilla. And the parents. And society. And Steve Jobs.

People are killed every day for lesser reasons...

Waiting a week is too much. You have to notice those things earlier. Every day you have to discipline your child, not once a week or month. You get to play x hours and that's it. Set the limit before play, not after a week of play.

It's not the first case I've heared of. Here in my town something similar happened. The victim was the mother and the boy had about the same age. He's locked in a white jacked and a specialized hospital.

It seems parents don't understand the power of games or the possible danger in young people.

This happens when the parents are too occupied in solving the material needs while their kids are receiving street (or virtual street) education.

Anti-gaming lobbyists will eat this up. They will jump on the idea of "the games made him do it" just a quick as others jump on "he had crappy parents". In truth, it's probably a combination of both. Now before you start flaming, let me explain. The fantasy world of video games is just that - fantasy. But without a parental figure explaining to the child that what is portrayed in video games is not real and not always ok, then what is to stop them from acting on what they see? Nothing. I don't believe that guns (or in this case sledgehammers) are any more responsible for killing people than video games are. You need a strong parental influence to educate and instruct young people on how to control their actions, emotions and impulses that result from an external stimulus (video games). Violent video games are out there, but they are designed for mature audiences for a reason. Parents who purchase them for their kids and don't follow up with appropriate guidance are only asking for trouble.

"Smells like Autism to me."

There was no stopping this kid from going off, it was just a matter of time. If it wasn't his dad taking away his keyboard that triggered him, it would probably be something else even less obvious/material. Too bad they didn't catch it before this happened.

I don't know... the mother gave back the keyboard and then call some relatives to let them inform the police?..
It's obvious that if the kid hammered his father's head without a slight trace of guilt he was indeed fucked in the brain. Its related with being a psico and all.
But I also don't understand how on earth this parents thought that taking the keyboard away was going to fix the issue.. It's more likely that their parents were trying to neglect the fact that their son was mentally ill. Grounding kids it's the worst way to fix problems.
On the other side, i think tayb it's right on the sad parts but it's more than evident that no normal or average family can suffer a crisis like the noted adobe. There for i do blame part of the guilt to the parenting, of course, it must be hard to be parents of a kid like that.

Ducktape + mouth = problem solved bwahahahaha

Either way, with such a small amount of information there has to be some reason as to why the kid did this. Sure there are actually some cases were something like this would happen because of something so stupid, though the child should have had some condition or a bad past. Be it bullying at school or slightly abusive parent(s) something HAD to cause him to flip.

Also "It can't be because of games" the kid is 14. He's young and does stupid things like every young kid because they're easily influenced by shit. I'm going to partly put the blame on the parents for not regulating the games he did play. I will blame the store manager (if he bought his disks non-DL which I highly suspect, least he stole his parent's credit card info but I think he's a bit dim for that) for selling him over-aged games.

Essentially, it's also his fault for being the one to decide and follow through in the act. I would personally wish to have him dead to remove some dust from a mountain of rubbish that is coating the homosapien gene pool.

1 down, a few million to go. Darwin is happy with each one you remove!
