I just bought a dell latitude cpx on ebay. Came with no operating system
installed and I'm wanting to install win 2000 pro on it. When turned on it
goes to the " C:\" prompt. What do I type in here to get started. Have tried
CD, CD Windows, Win, get bad command or file name. Can I install from c
prompt or better off to fdisk and start from there. Thanks for any help.

It has an operating system on it or else you would not get the "C:"
prompt which refers to the C: drive. What's your CDROM drive called?
Type "D:" then "E:"....... and see if it accesses the drive.

If not, see if setup recognizes it? If not, see if you can create a
boot disc (floppy) that will.

thanks for reply. evidently cd is "B" type this in, says insert diskette
for drive b, press key to continue. but then says not ready reading drive b.
floppy and disk are interchangeable, have tried both, kinda stuck here.

Nope. "B" is a floppy which is why it says "insert diskette." You
should try what JPS suggests if setup will let you boot from the CDR
drive.

Configure the machine to boot from CD in the BIOS then boot with the W2K CD.

When you start up your laptop, during the process you will see a boot
screen - when your laptop is reading and loading it's BIOS/CMOS. No doubt
you'll see something like "hit DEL for setup", or maybe ALT-F2 or whatever
key (combination) If you see do so, and you'll end up in the BIOS screen.

Now locate a "BOOT" section. Here you can specify from which station you
want to startup. Select the name of your CD-ROM as the first boot device.
Now you save the settings, restart the laptop with the W2K CD in the
player and install Windows.

After installing, you can change the BIOS setting back to start from the
hard disk.
